Norton Independence Day Parade Information:

06/30/2026

Did you know that Norton, VA is the smallest incorporated city in the Commonwealth of Virginia?! Centrally located at the intersection of two main highways -- U.S. 23 and U.S. Route 58 Alternate -- and near the crossroads of three states, the city offers what it calls "an abundance of natural, cultural and historic landmarks" with ample opportunities to dine, shop and stay awhile in the mountain community nestled beneath High K**b, the highest point in the Cumberland Mountains. One place you need to be sure not to miss is Flag Rock!

Flag Rock Recreation Area is located three miles above downtown Norton on the lower slopes of High K**b. The thousand-acre park includes 25 developed acres and a variety of outdoor adventures, including mountain biking, hiking, fishing, paddling, climbing, camping and picnicking! It's also the sanctuary for the green salamander and the notorious woodbooger. When wandering along the gravel path that leads to the Flag Rock Overlook, you can’t miss the giant statue of the Bigfoot-like creature locally known as the "Woodbooger." The inspiration for the statue, accoring to the nortonva.gov website may be traced back to a visit by Animal Planet’s Finding Bigfoot TV show, which filmed part of an episode on High K**b in 2011. Norton City Council in October 2014 passed a memorandum declaring Flag Rock Recreation Area a "Woodbooger Sanctuary."

Make your plans now to visit -- plan a three-day stay and play weekend and you're sure to find plenty to do! Photo courtesy NortonVA.gov. Photo by Belcher Images.
