I’ve always had a thing about guest rooms.

There’s something really special about making a place for someone you love to land. A beautiful bed, something soft underfoot, a little privacy, and that feeling when they walk in that you really thought about them.

This is one of my favorite guest suites that I’ve designed. I think the way we welcome people into our homes says a lot about how we love them.

Especially on a holiday weekend, when houses are fuller, people stay up too late, coffee lasts half the morning and someone is always looking for an extra towel.

I’ve never thought of a guest room as the extra room. It’s where you make space for the people you love.

TRUE STORY.

Every space has a heartbeat. You just have to slow down long enough to feel it.

I tell my clients this all the time when they buy a new home. Don’t rush to furnish every room. Don’t feel like every empty wall needs an answer immediately. Live there for a little while. Let the house show you who you are inside of it.

Pay attention to where everyone gathers without thinking about it. Where you drink your coffee. Where the light is incredible at four in the afternoon. Where the dog decides to curl up. The room you thought would be the center of everything that turns out not to be, and the little corner you never gave much thought to that becomes your favorite place in the house.

We’re so quick to want our homes finished. I get it. I love the furniture, the art, the wallpaper, the beautiful things as much as anyone. But after doing this for more than 25 years, I’ve learned that the really good stuff comes when you leave a little room for discovery.

A home feels different once life starts happening inside of it. You begin to understand what it needs, what you need from it, and what was never necessary in the first place.

That’s the part I’m always looking for when I design. The heartbeat that was there before I ever walked through the door.

Give me a little time in a house and I’ll find it.

Who doesn’t love a dramatic transformation?

And I mean… THE RED.

This kitchen had a lot going on when we started. Red walls, cherry cabinetry, a much smaller island, so much visual weight.

But there was also this incredible volume, beautiful light and really good bones hiding underneath all of it. So we gave it a serious update.

Every detail was custom from the cabinetry to the hood. All the things.

Watching the old kitchen wash away into the new one on this project reel is one of my faves.

Final floor color day.
And yes, we looked at A LOT of samples.
On the floor. Against the millwork. In the morning light. In the afternoon light.

These floors are red oak, which naturally has some warm pink, peach, salmon, and golden undertones. We wanted to soften and balance those tones while still allowing the natural character of the wood to come through. What we achieved is a finish that comes pretty close to the look of a French-washed oak, and we couldn’t be happier with it.

Floor color changes everything.
The undertone, the warmth, the way every other finish in the house reads. So this is one decision I will happily obsess over until it feels exactly right.

Beauty and function should never be separate.

And nowhere does that matter more than in a space designed around how someone actually lives.

I designed this primary bathroom for my client who uses a wheelchair, and there’s a tremendous amount of thought behind what you see here. Her reach. Her movement. Her independence. Clearances and transitions. How she approaches the vanity and moves through the shower.

But none of those things meant the room had to feel clinical or compromised. It could be beautiful. Luxurious. Vibrant. And it doesn’t take itself too seriously, just like her ;)

For me, It’s that intersection of beauty and function where some of the best design lives.
