The same Lascaux tile appears on both the pool waterline and the kitchen wall, whose windows peek out onto the pool. We felt very pleased with ourselves on this one.

The chapter of my new book, This Must Be the Place, dedicated to our ‘Twin Peaks on Prozac’ project is all about color & pattern. Shocking, I know.

Pick up your copy at your local bookstore or via the link in my bio for more on how we used dramatic pattern, saturated color, and brave layering to create a sense of playful abundance.

California Dreaming, indeed! A million thanks to Jill Cohen, Sarah Shelton, and Lauren Gallow for a gorgeous four-page spread in the national edition of Luxe showcasing one of our latest beach houses.

We call this project “The Sound of Music, and Also, the Ocean.” Partly for obvious reasons, and partly because our style guide features cheerful and tidy icon Maria von Trapp crossed with a rugged Marin County surfer.

Grab a copy of Luxe’s May/June issue, on newsstands now, and my new book, This Must Be the Place (this home is the star of Chapter 3!), to see more of this project in print.

With soft seating, soft lighting, softly glowing silk walls, the atmosphere here is sumptuous but not stiff. The key is not being overly matchy-matchy and playing with symmetry.

Listen to the ‘Character Building’ playlist in my story highlights to discover some of the bouncy, intellectual, Californian tracks I imagine spinning from a record player stowed in that gorgeous Isle Crawford brass cabinet.

Honored to have my new book, This Must Be the Place, featured as a Editor’s Pick. This week has been full of highlights, and describing my work as filled with mischief, wit, and entirely unforgettable (!!) is very high on the list.

Read the full feature on ruemag.com, and order This Must Be the Place via the link in bio to see how I work with clients to transform their vision into something “sharper and stranger.”

Our senses meditate the world, and what is more worthy than making this one, wild, beautiful life a nice one?

My book, This Must Be the Place, is a tool to help readers do just that. I love a formula, a Venn Diagram, a recipe, and I’ve been trying for twenty years to lock in on what makes a great house.

There’s definitely some magic in there, but finding the right balance of these elements is the key: color, pattern, form, materiality, ornament, light, artifacts, and art.

These ingredients are worth getting to know; they are the DNA of atmosphere, and also the subtitles of each chapter of my book, which comes out TOMORROW!

Pre-order This Must Be the Place now via the link in bio for more on the recipe.

In my upcoming book, This Must Be the Place, I share many ways to conjure atmosphere—and music is one of the fastest. That’s why, at the start of each project, I curate a playlist to build on our style guide and set the mood.

I share the playlists for each project featured in the book in hopes that you’ll listen as you read and start thinking about what atmosphere you want to live in and how that might shape some of your own design choices. What’s on your playlist?

Prepare for this Tuesday’s release by listening to each playlist via the links shared in my highlights, and pre-ordering This Must Be the Place via the link in my bio.

In Chapter 9 of This Must Be the Place, I tell the story of clients who decided to hire me based on the color and font of RAD’s job-site signs. If you know me, you’ll know that this ridiculous but righteous move thrilled me to no end.

When they played the Fruit Bats in our kick-off meeting it was like smelling my childhood best friend’s house. We went on to learn that we were the same age and shared a love for bands that played at Paradise Rock Club in Boston, where we all lived in the aughts.

The outstanding mind-meld on everything—from fonts to art to florals to alpaca to wicker—made the process of designing this cozy, happy home instinctual.

Tickled to talk pink palettes in Volume 20 of , on newsstands now.

I share my thoughts on the shade’s surprising versatility, how it creates tension with other colors, and its ability to reflect the sun without blinding you or absorbing too much heat—a fun fact I learned on a trip to Morocco.

The piece utilizes imagery from my upcoming book, This Must Be the Place, to illustrate each point. Pre-order now via the link in bio and pick up Volume XX of Frederic for more.

Thank you to , , and
