WAY BACK MACHINE:
Traveling to Ocean City, circa 1890

Back in the days when Ocean City was a fledgling new resort town, travelers arrived by rail at a station serving the Wicomico & Pocomoke line. The station was located on Baltimore Avenue between Somerset and Wicomico streets. The railroad route into town was relocated onto Philadelphia Avenue in 1903.

I came across this photo and information in the out-of-print book "102 Gentlemen & a Lady: The Story of the Atlantic Hotel Company in Ocean City, Maryland." In the book, this photo is estimated to be from 1890 and credited to the collection of the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum.

We dug up a box of old Briarwick Halloween photos and I swear every picture gets better. 🎃📼

This one is from the Halloween dance in 1979, and these two really said, “yeah, let’s make our heads three feet wide” and then slow-danced all night like that was a completely normal thing to do. 😭

But look at everybody else too. THAT’S the part I love.

A bedsheet ghost. A pig mask with office clothes. Some deeply questionable rubber masks. Cardboard. Papier-mâché. Bad paint. Probably enough tape holding everything together to stock a hardware store.

Nobody matched. Nobody looked like they ordered the same costume online. Everybody just showed up with whatever weird little idea had been living in their head and MADE IT.

That was Briarwick Halloween.

It could be creepy, funny, ridiculous and weirdly beautiful all at once. And if your homemade mask came out a little more terrifying than you intended? Even better. 😂

I miss when making your own Halloween costume was basically the norm.

And right in the middle of all this chaos are these two giant pumpkins, completely in love, bumping papier-mâché foreheads under a disco ball.

Briarwick was built different. 🎃🖤
