As a recent guest interviewee at an Oklahoma City Beautiful Sustainability Social, I got back to the basics and focused on slowing down personal carbon debt. “The most sustainable building is the one that’s already built” extends to other durable items. I emphasized fixing your stuff instead of throwing it away. Case in point, I gave my 20 year old mower new life with a new carburetor/tune up kit and pull cord mechanism. For about $30 I delayed this guy’s end of life, keeping it out of the landfill and delaying the carbon debt of materials, manufacturing and shipping of the new mower. Monetarily, I’ll break even if it lasts just this mowing season, not to mention the satisfaction of successfully fixing something.

A couple months ago, I was looking at the official City of OKC platting map for a district that was platted in 1928, and I pointed out that although other revisions and corrections had been recently marked up by staff, the clause remained: “property shall not… be leased, sold… to any person of African descent…” This verbiage was included on every OKC plat that I’ve seen from that era.

I’m not implying that my conversation had anything to do with this finally getting done, just that it was serendipitous, having recently worked with those 1928 plats.

This little sucker just arrived. I got it so I can see what the f**k time it is when the cat yells at me in the wee hours of the AM.

Designed by Virgil Abloh of design house “off-white” in collaboration with Braun, it’s a throwback to a 1980s Dieter Rams and Dietrich Lub design. In 2021, it was released as a limited edition in either bright orange or pale blue for about $70.

The blue ones are getting hard to find, so I had to turn over a couple hundred frog skins for this new one that had been a shop display model. New in an unopened box is more like $350, but I’m going to use this sucker for bedside and will hopefully start leaving my phone in the office for the good of my mental health.

OMG. I deserve this.

I got a Starbucks mocha and I asked to put in a shot of caramel too, to hopefully cover up the awful taste of their coffee. Over a year ago, I got a $10 gift card for doing some historic preservation related presentation, pecha cucha style, at an AIA luncheon. The card had been taunting me ever since. What a relief!
