Lucky Rooster Yarns

Lucky Rooster Yarns Lucky Rooster Yarns LLC is open in Olathe! This locally owned shop offers yarn, tools, classes, and a gathering place. Hi! Olathe needs a yarn shop.

Welcome to Lucky Rooster Yarns in Olathe (OH-lay-thuh), Kansas. We need more places to connect with community and the therapeutic benefits of crafting with yarn. Lucky Rooster's mission is to offer a place to help meet these needs with yarn, tools, classes, and a gathering place. The owner, Kathleen, named the shop for her two children: the first tends to walk through life with some kind of charme

d shield around her, and the second is well described as a rooster. You might see these kids at the shop (Lucky and Rooster are not their real names!), and you might spot Kathleen's husband, Darrell, on site as well. Please take time to say hi and introduce yourself to us when you pop by. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. If you are looking for a specific yarn, tool, or class, please send a message. As a new shop, there is a lot of room to influence how it grows.

Well done, Michele!!

Not only did she make this lovely "office sweater," she did it freestyle (without a pattern)! I love seeing what people make - this just never gets old. Michele chose Huasco Coton Glisten by Araucania Yarns. This fi*****ng weight yarn drapes well, and the sparkle dresses it up for work and parties.

It feels a little witchy to say this: my eyes are sorted!

Kits to make two little mushroom friends are provided in the "He's a Fungi" class. You can choose plain black or glittery eyes for your little dudes (or dudettes) and each type is offered in two different sizes. Somehow the larger eyes make them appear to be better listeners. Who knew!

Whether you are new to making socks or just wanting to learn a new method, the Two at a Time (TAAT) sock class is for you. We are using two circular needles and making both socks at the same time with DK (6-ply) weight yarn. Thank you, Jennifer C., for teaching!

Classes at Lucky Rooster are a great chance to make new friends, focus on a project, and boost your confidence. There is still room in TAAT - sign up on the website or in-store for $60. You may bring your own yarn or take advantage of the 15% discount on yarn for your class.

We are meeting on Tuesdays beginning June 2 from 5:30-7:30. There is a microwave in the shop for you to use, and a couple great restaurants nearby in case you're needing dinner. Please feel welcome to call/message/email with any other questions. -Kathleen (photo of singleton socks as I've never done TAAT and am excited to learn). (Rooster needs new socks).

"But WHY an OCTOPUS?"

Ok, that's a fair question. This is a charity project stitchers make with scrap yarn to give to NICUs. Babies hooked up to machines instinctively grasp the tubes connecting them to their medical devices, and that is not desireable. When given an octopus to clutch babies tend to leave their tubes free of obstacles.

Join in the fun on Saturday, June 13 from 2 - 4 p.m. as we learn best practices for making stuffed toys from scrap yarn from Jace F. Polyfill to use for stuffing is provided. Participants need to bring scrap yarn and a corresponding crochet hook.

We're handling sign-ups differently for this class. Call or email the shop with your contact information so Kathleen and Jace know to expect you. Plan to pay the $15 class fee directly to Jace with cash or Venmo. This cuts down on credit card fees and gives our instructor the benefit. Thanks for understanding!

Creating toys, decor, wearables, and more is just cool. You can put your stamp onto projects, lower your anxiety, and reduce waste in the world when you DIY. While choosing to learn crocheting or knitting, customers often ask, "Which is easier? If I want to learn both, which should I learn first?"

I do think crocheting is easier, especially for kiddos who are still fine-tuning their motor skills. However, if you want to learn both crafts, I suggest starting with knitting. Once you learn the "harder" one, it won't be as daunting to pick up crocheting. Knitting uses less yarn, so, if you want to save on materials cost in the long-term, go with that one.

If reading is really not your thing, then I suggest crocheting: it is easier to freestyle the projects (create without a pattern), though you can freestyle with any art form. (BTW: I'm pretty sure the green child's cardigan pictured here was freestyled back in 1955, and it's a gem.)

Knitting and crocheting are certainly not the only yarn crafts! Loom knitting, tunisian crochet, weaving, tatting, and more are all right here in our community - these are just the two I see most often.
