Mr. She’s Crafty (Jason Studt) pitches in and helps make masks too because he’s the best. The Med Center has an awesome program where they deliver materials at the doors of sewing volunteers and pick the masks up a week later. This is enough for 72 masks and the instructions are simple enough that the kids can help cut fabric.

I have been doing ALOT of sewing in the evenings lately. Cranking out masks as fast as I possibly can after my day job. Tonight my younger brother asked me if I would repair his “Grammie” blanket if he mailed it from Florida.

Our paternal grandmother was the absolute best. She was the kind of grandma who would meet you at the door with a bowl of frozen oatmeal cookies and a Pepsi because she knew your mom would never let that fly at home. The kind who would let you put up all her Christmas decorations even though she’d have move all of it after you left.

One year, she made these quilts for my brothers and I out of our dad’s old pajamas and other fabrics from his childhood home. It’s the kind of blanket where you are never too hot or cold and every time I look at it, I notice something different. I had a roommate in college who would beg to borrow and I will not share how little I wash it for fear it will fall apart. I almost never look at the To/From because it makes me cry every.damn.time.

Of course I told my brother I’d be happy to reinforce his “Grammie” blanket no matter how much sewing I’ve been doing. It sits on his daughter’s bed and he says it’s perfect for their weather.

It’s always been perfect for a lot of reasons. I make jokes that my sewing hobby is an “old lady” hobby but I love the idea that my kids and grandkids will look at the things I’ve made them like this long after I’m gone.

Question-if you were to wear one of these, would you prefer the elastic hoops or ribbons you can tie? I’ve had several people ask if I was planning on making some of the secondary (not CDC approved) fabric masks for non-healthcare use. I was always “planning” on it but my day job, e-learning, feeding a family of five without going out, mental health preservation and all the other things that are going on right now and I’m just now giving it a try! Anyway, they are super easy to make but I’d like to hear how people would prefer to tie these? I’ve seen the tricks with paper clips and buttons to hook the elastics.
