Ted Binion was born in 1943 to the famous Las Vegas Binion's Horseshoe Casino family.

He enjoyed nonstop partying (who wouldn't?), drugs, s*x and the prestige of a Las Vegas casino owner. His spoiled child's excesses morphed into antics that impacted Binion's ability to keep his casino.

Drug issues weren't enough for Ted, and he managed to screw up his unmerited glitzy life by associating with known mobsters. One friend, Herbert "Fat Herbie" Blitzstein, a Chicago Mob member, proved the last straw for the Nevada Gaming Commission, who permanently banned Binion. Binion was the first to suffer the fate under a new law. Bad for Ted, though not as bad as the bullet in the head that ended Fat Herbie, courtesy of a rival mobster. Ted's turn was coming.

Ejected from his casino, Ted built massive bunker on a boonies property 60 miles west in Pahrump that protected an underground vault. Seems Ted was a Civil War buff and coin collector. He was also a genius in mental mathematical calculations, but that has nothing to do with what happened :). That Pahrump vault housed 100,000 rare coins.

On Sep 17, 1998, Ted Binion was found dead in his Las Vegas estate, empty pill bottles scattered about. The autopsy cast doubt on su***de. Ted was a pro at taking drugs, while the contents in his system made him appear a narco-amateur. Plus, two days after Binion's death, his girlfriend Sandy Murphy (a wholesome girl from a topless bar) and Rick Tabish, owner of the firm that built Ted's mega-vault, were caught with an excavator and a dump truck on dead Ted's Pahrump property.

Sandy and Rick were convicted of Ted's murder...but received a new trial because of the judge's instructions (among other things) to the first jury. Famous defense lawyers got them both acquitted of murder, but not of grand larceny and burglary. Sufficient time served, Sandy was released to toplesshood. Tabish was paroled in 2010.

This coin was owned by the history-buff-numismatic-drug-fiend-Las-Vegas-casino-owner-mafia-tagalong Ted Binion. It suffered exile from the Horseshoe casino to Pahrump, Nevada with Ted, and was the target of the avarice of Topless Sandy and Rick the Builder.

Franco-Prussian War Ambulance Medal in PCGS SP63 (Pop 1/0)

- Awesome Chocolate Patina with the high relief expected out of highly-artistic, French medals.

- Only example graded by PCGS

- The Franco-Prussian War (known as The War of 1870 in France) was a stinging defeat of the French Army by a confederation of German States led by Prussia.

- Emperor Napoleon III (nephew of the real Napoleon) attempted to reassert French dominance on the European continent. Prussia, and Kaiser Wilhelm's man Otto von Bismarck stood in the way. The French mobilized and attacked the German Confederation...and suffered nearly 10 to 1 in losses.

- The war ended after a disastrous defeat for the French that saw their Emperor Napoleon III captured and forced to surrender.

- Of note: American Civil War Union hero General Philip Sheridan was one of many foreign military observers invited by the Prussians. He was at many of the battles and witnessed the French surrender.

- This medal commemorates the French battlefield ambulance services. Judging by the outcome, it seems those folks were quite busy.
