Winter Park has faced moments like this before.
Many in our community know and love Casa Feliz as a gathering place for weddings, events, and celebrations of Winter Park’s history. When the Rogers-designed landmark was threatened decades ago, the community came together to save it. With the leadership of Jack Rogers, FAIA, then president of RLF and the son of architect James Gamble Rogers II, along with the passionate advocacy of the Friends of Casa Feliz and many community members, the home was carefully relocated across the street and restored. Today, Casa Feliz stands as one of Winter Park’s most cherished historic landmarks.
Now another Rogers design, Merrywood (1939), is part of an important community conversation. The estate was designed by James Gamble Rogers II, founder of RLF, whose work helped shape the architectural character of Winter Park.
That legacy of stewardship continues today. Gamble Rogers’ granddaughter, Betsy Owens, now serves as Executive Director of Casa Feliz, carrying forward the same commitment to preserving the architectural heritage that defines this community.
The future of Merrywood involves many considerations, and thoughtful perspectives exist on all sides. For those interested in learning more about the current discussion and possible paths forward, this recent article from the Winter Park Voice provides helpful context and community viewpoints:

Merrywood at a Crossroads — Community Meeting Tomorrow
A demolition permit has been filed for Merrywood, the extraordinary 1939 lakefront home at 1020 Palmer Avenue designed by noted architect James Gamble Rogers II. Because the house is listed on the City of Winter Park’s Historic Resources Survey, a 90-day delay before demolition has been triggered—creating an important window to explore preservation solutions.
Tomorrow morning, the Winter Park Historic Preservation Board will meet to begin discussing the path forward.
The Friends of Casa Feliz encourages preservation-minded residents to attend and demonstrate support for finding a thoughtful community solution that preserves this irreplaceable piece of Winter Park’s architectural heritage.
