August 23 1305 In Scottish patriot William Wallace is executed for high treason by Edward I of England at Smithfield, London.. He is hanged, drawn and quartered, and his head is placed on a pike on London Bridge. His four limbs are displayed, separately, in Perth, Stirling, Berwick-on-Tweed and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Since his death Wallace has become an iconic figure in Scotland and abroad. He was famously portrayed by Mel Gibson in the Academy Award-winning film Braveheart.

August 23, 1978 In Kobe Bryant Professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA).was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bryant entered the NBA directly from high school, and had played for the Lakers his entire career, winning five NBA championships until a helicopter crash in foggy conditions in the hills above Calabasas, southern California took his life.

August 23, 1754 in King Louis XVI was born at the Palace of Versaille, as Louis-Auguste. He grew up to become the last monarch of France before the French Revolution, reigning from 1774 until the monarchy was abolished in 1792.

Obverse signed by Nicholas Marie Gatteaux. A right-facing bust of , Most Christian King appears on the obverse of this medal.
Reverse features a personification of Peace, standing with an olive branch in her right hand and a horn of plenty in her left, signed by Du Vivier. Gatteaux (1751-1832) who was a medalist in Paris. He was employed by the Medal-Mint and was elected Medallist to the King in 1781.
The legend translates as, "Peace between France and England, at Versailles, 1783.

August 23, 1775 in King George III issued the Proclamation of 1763 in response to the arrival of William Penn in England, carrying Congress's petition for independence. This action officially declared the colonies to be in a state of rebellion. The Proclamation of 1763 attempted to limit that expansion but was immediately unpopular and proved to be nearly impossible to enforce.
It was an early source of dissatisfaction with British rule that would simmer and grow until the outbreak of the Revolution

August, 23 1965 in The United States Mint in Philadelphia started production of the new clad quarters, authorized by the Coinage Act of 1965. These are the first coins to bear the date "1965" marking the historic transition away from traditional 90% silver circulating coinage. The new coins featured outer layers of a 75% copper and 25% nickel alloy bonded to a pure copper core. The Coinage Act of 1965 was Signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 23, 1965, to combat severe nationwide silver shortages and hoarding

August 23, 1991 Eva Adams died in Reno, Nevada. Ms. Adams was appointed in 1961, by President John F. Kennedy to become Director of the United States Mint. Adams subsequently held that office from October 1961 until August 1969. She was the second woman to hold the title of Director at the Mint. She cleaned up processes and made them more efficient. She also helped plan the opening of the current Philadelphia Mint, which opened in 1969. Once the Mint was operating, Adams resigned.
