Remember this mount? Mini Mounts Co. | Mounted Orchids

A few days ago, I shared why I don’t list an orchid for sale immediately after mounting it.

This Epidendrum nanum is exactly why.

It didn’t establish, so I removed the plant, cleaned the old mounting area, and gave this piece of driftwood another chance.

But I didn’t buy another orchid to replace it.

I went to my personal collection and took a division of one of my Bulbophyllum jenkinsii. I selected a viable section, treated the fresh cut, found the position where it could naturally grow across the wood, added just enough sphagnum for moisture, and secured it in place.

On the other side, the Jacquiniella globosa is still there. Still alive. Still trying to establish.

So is this mount finished?

Physically, yes.

But that doesn’t mean it’s ready.

Now the Bulbophyllum jenkinsii gets the same thing every newly mounted orchid gets here: time.

Time to adapt.
Time to grow.
Time to show me that it wants to stay.

Now we wait. Again.

THIS IS WHY I WAIT.

Recently, I shared why I don’t list a mounted orchid for sale as soon as I finish the mount.

This is the other side of that story.

Mounting an orchid is only the beginning. The real test comes afterward, when the plant has to adapt to its new environment, maintain growth, and begin establishing itself on the mount.

Sometimes it works beautifully.

Sometimes it doesn’t.

Mounted doesn’t mean established.



This Epidendrum nanum never established.

It was mounted. It was cared for. It was given time.

And it still didn’t make it.

Losses are part of growing orchids, especially when plants are adapting to mounted culture. Not every orchid responds the way we hope, even when we give it the conditions and attention we believe it needs.

And this is exactly why I wait before offering a newly mounted orchid for sale.

If I had listed this mount immediately because it looked finished, this could have become someone else’s disappointment.

Instead, it became something for me to learn from.



And on the other side of the same piece of wood, this Jacquiniella globosa is still trying.

There is green growth. There are encouraging signs. The plant is alive.

But alive and established are not the same thing.

So I’ll keep watching. I’ll give it time and let the plant tell me what comes next.

For me, that waiting period is part of creating a Mini Mount.

Because alive doesn’t mean ready to sell.

APRIL 24 | BEFORE

This was the day I took this little Aerangis luteo-alba var. rhodosticta out of compot.

And it wasn’t pretty.

Damaged roots. Stressed leaves. A plant with very little room for error.

This has been one of the most challenging miniature orchids I’ve worked with through the compot stage. At this size, every viable root matters, every leaf matters, and sometimes the best thing you can do is give the plant the right conditions and wait.

AUGUST 19 | 117 DAYS LATER

No flowers. No dramatic transformation.

Just one new root from this Aerangis luteo-alba var. rhodosticta growing across the wine cork and beginning to anchor itself to the mount.

But when you know where this orchid was 117 days ago, that tiny root feels like a huge win.

Some leaves were lost. Some roots struggled. But she kept growing.

This is one of the things I love most about growing mounted miniature orchids. Progress isn’t always spectacular. Sometimes you have to look closely enough to notice it.

117 days. One tiny root tip. A completely different outlook.

Growing orchids is patience. Growing miniature orchids is humility.

And sometimes, success is just a tiny root tip.

How do you fertilize a mounted orchid? 🌿

Mounted orchids need a slightly different approach to fertilization than orchids growing in pots.

With exposed roots and very little material around them to retain water or nutrients, fertilizer moves through a mount quickly. The goal isn’t a stronger dose. It’s consistent, gentle nutrition during active growth.

A few principles I follow with mounted orchids:

💧 Feed weakly and regularly. Dilute fertilizer applied consistently is generally preferable to occasional heavy feeding.

💧 Start dilute. Around ¼ of the manufacturer’s recommended strength can be a practical starting point, then adjust for your fertilizer, water quality, species and growing conditions.

💧 Water first, fertilize second. Hydrating exposed roots before feeding helps reduce the risk of fertilizer salts contacting very dry roots.

💧 Flush the entire mount. Plain water helps remove accumulated fertilizer salts from both the roots and mounting material.

💧 Watch the plant, not just the calendar. Active roots and new growth are your best clues that the orchid is actively growing and using nutrients.

One of my favorite principles in orchid culture is “weakly, weekly.” But with mounted orchids, I’d add another:

Feed the growth, not the calendar.

Save this guide for your next feeding day, and send it to someone growing orchids on cork, wood, terracotta or another mount.

Before they held roots, they held celebrations. 🥂🌱

A bottle was opened. A toast was made. And somewhere along the way, a Champagne cork reached the end of its first story.

We decided to give it another one.

At Mini Mounts Co., each rescued Champagne cork becomes the foundation for a living piece of botanical art, pairing its own history with the story of a miniature orchid.

Some come from iconic Champagne houses. Others from Prosecco, Cava and sparkling wine producers across different regions and traditions. Different origins. Different orchids. No two stories exactly alike.
