On Saturday, I received a letter from my dear Amish family, which certainly caught me by surprise. We had never exchanged mail previously; our communications were typically in person or via Daniel's phone calls. I was taken aback by the letter's length and the level of detail provided about each child. With school out, they are now occupying their time playing outside, interspersed with chores, of course. Lori also shared that Katie and Ivan had contracted whooping cough, and baby, Susan, only coughed a little, so her mother was uncertain whether she had also experienced the illness. Lori further informed me that they are planning a trip to Arkansas this week,to inspect their newly purchased property and decide on the location for their home. They have agreed to allow a new schoolhouse to be built on their property, which will enable their children to walk to school instead, of the buggy ride 4-5 miles, they have followed for years. Indeed, a significant change is looming in our lives. I have been aware of their plans to relocate and be closer to family members, gaining more affordable land to support their life. Most of the children are very excited to move, although little Daniel is a bit apprehensive. They have visited and love the area, and will have cousins to play with and school nearby. They have a wooded area on their new property, so they are excited to explore. I’m truly happy for all of them. I have always felt badly, with their current location, as they are rather isolated from other Amish families, and relatives were far away. I have been treasuring every visit that I have with them, not knowing when this will end. They can go ahead and move prior to their house being built, as the AMISH will always take care of others in the community. I plan to visit tomorrow, and hope they aren’t leaving for Arkansas tonight. They usually travel during the overnight, when they ride a great distance. Just a few weeks ago, Lori told me they could still move this spring, but they may wait till the end of summer. I know it’s important for them to finish and start each school year on schedule. All I can do is treasure my time, grateful for each hour, before we become simply pen pals.❤️
