What a fun business we are in. This fall we get to overhaul a kitchen we did in 1986. I am super excited about this, and to working with this awesome family once again! In the '80's we did (1) their parents kitchen, then (2) the uncle & aunt's kitchen, (3) the brother's kitchen and finally (4) their own kitchen.
We got passed around like dinner rolls at a potluck lol! Now after all these years, (5) here we go again! Check out my 1986 kitchen-keep in mind that this oak custom kitchen was done to the hilt-as we understood it then! Don't miss the state-of-the-art matching fluorescent light box 😁
I'll put the "after" pix on here down the road.

One of our favorite things is working again for our great former customers-going full circle! We get to revisit the kitchen we did, see how our customers are doing, and help out again. Here's a great example: from Y2K, this natural maple kitchen is looking good for 23 years, and now it's time to update the three bathrooms as well- making sure of course that at least one is operational at all times. Here are a couple of "after" shots, a memorable "before" with lots of pink, and our 23 year old Y2K kitchen. And best of all, what a nice review! Thanks, it was great to re-connect!

VERY HAPPY REPEAT CUSTOMER

When it came time to redo three 1959-era bathrooms, we got several bids but returned to using Armstrong Kitchens again after having had such a good experience with them for a total renovation of our kitchen in 2000.

Kristeen is a delight to work with and is so knowledgeable about functional design, retro fitting older homes, and choosing good materials. Once designs and materials were selected, the process flowed smoothly under Lowell’s careful supervision. Their crews for plumbing, tile, lighting, drywall and carpentry have been with them for many years and provide quality installation with care to protect your home during construction. They try to schedule the work as tightly as possible and we were able to have all three baths completed in about four and a half months. Lowell always kept us informed of the process along the way and made sure every detail was finished as planned. We are extremely pleased with our new baths. We soundly recommend Armstrong Kitchens to others considering kitchen and bath remodeling projects.

This fall we met the neatest lady, a friend's friend who needed to get her old bathroom updated with a specific goal in mind. She explained to me that she wants to live in her home forever, so at 84 she's now remodeling. After all, she explained, her mother lived to be 104 so she could be here a long time! We replaced the floor with a more non-skid Akoye Matte tile, created a low curb roomy shower with easy-to-clean materials, added discreet grab bars, boosted the lighting and built in other safety and access measures for aging in place. (People often don't realize that "aging in place" is different than regular access design.) I thought I'd share a few of the safety changes, and you can see that her buddy Moose enjoys the results.

Proof positive that the BEST kitchen remodels are the DONE kitchen remodels. Living the good life after construction in their new space, our great customers sent these in and we appreciate it! This outcome is always the goal! For fun I will add a couple of "before" photos-I don't think you will have any problem telling which they are. Scout (seven pounds of furry energy) is also enjoying himself, but I still miss his enthusiastic greetings whenever the doorbell rang. Thanks so much for sharing these!

Well school is back in session again, and it is really a treat to be able to go on field trips again with the JCCC Kitchen & Bath students. I won't ever take those opportunity for granted after last year when we couldn't go anywhere due to covid. We had a great tour of several businesses today, and wrapped it up at Kopps Flooring in Lenexa, where our wonderful host Julie talked about carpet, wood flooring, vinyl, why she loves the flooring business.
Julie also fed us snacks! Well rounded with the five food groups as she said: protein, dairy, grain, fruits and chocolate! Thank you Julie!

A couple of weeks ago, an elderly gent came into our store and laid a broken drawer bracket on the counter. He asked, did we have another one of these? He had gotten his kitchen from us in 1975-and now it finally needed something- a new drawer bracket! If you have seen our (hoarder) warehouse of misc, you know that of course I did indeed have the part.

He told me that his late wife and my mother, both named Betty, had become good friends during the remodel. He chuckled that whenever the two Betty's got together over a new idea, he knew his price was going up. (He pointed to the etched glass detail as an example.) That was allright, he continued, because his wife ought to have just what she wanted for her kitchen.

We made arrangements to come over and put on the drawer bracket- and I made sure I got to come too so I could get better acquainted and see the kitchen for myself. So here are some pictures, not fancy, just from my phone- of an Armstrong Kitchen done when I was still in college.

These kinds of things are part of what I love about this old business. It was a great chance for our son Mark to see work from his grandparents time. I wonder what my parents would think if they could see their grandson doing the service call?

We love what we do.

We love what we do, we always have. Yes, some days are better than others. Right now we would rather not be dealing with a pandemic, for example. But I can say, after 40 years of creating wonderful kitchens and baths, that it never gets old. The exciting design process, the constant new products, the advance of technology-it just gets better all the time. The very best part is the people we get to work with. A customer from 2014 called recently for some information. I got to catch up with her life since we did her kitchen. In 2014, she was expecting the arrival of her first grandchild. I remember it was even more exciting than her new kitchen; (Not many events can upstage a kitchen remodel!) Now she has five grandchildren, and she shared with me how much the kids enjoyed the window seat we had designed. Nothing is more fun for a designer than seeing the plan work the way we visualized it. It occurred to me that I’ve been enjoying these kinds of experiences for a long time. Check out the “glamour shot” below of me and my customers, proudly posing in their new dream kitchen. Don’t miss the hair style and the shoulder pads please. I leave it to you to guess the year.
