Friday night hot tub happy place. It was a busy week: vendor visits in Orange County for two days, a whole house furnishings presentation, adding a layer of accessories for a current client, ordering furnishings for our Idaho project, and sending out a design package for our project in San Jose. I will present that whole-house furniture design to our San Jose clients via Zoom tomorrow; our client will “unbox” our room-by-room presentation as I show our renderings on-screen.

But tonight, I exhale and take in the view.

I feel a shift in energy. In mine, anyway. The world is still chaotic, but I am working to recalibrate my equilibrium. Anyone else?

No filter. I have felt “off” all month (year!) — as I’m sure so many of us have. It hasn’t been easy to post “pretty pictures” or carry on like “normal” when so many things in our world are not normal, at all.

Our landscaper was taken by ICE weeks ago.

Tonight, I snapped this photo outside our new home. My heart is full of gratitude; yet heavy at the same time. My husband has been working on our landscape lighting. A reminder that we can — we must, in fact — carry on with the seemingly mundane activities of life. And, frankly, it feels pretty privileged and trivial. I am fully aware of that; and the dichotomy is a lot to process. Maybe you are feeling it; too.

And yet, after this day of solidarity and protest, my heart is full tonight. I feel more hope than I have in a long time. The tide is turning, good people. Their armor is cracking. Their lies and hypocrisy are being exposed more each day.

This is the Lord of the Rings and we are Frodo. This is Star Wars and we are Luke and Leia. Keep visualizing that.

Do not despair. Do not feel overwhelmed. That is what they want. Keep fighting, keep spreading the truth, keep seeking each other out. Even if our well-meaning elected officials do not speak up, we can and we WILL. It’s not easy, but we got this.

Taking a big post-Christmas exhale in the hot tub. We hosted Christmas Eve with 40+ for a sit down dinner at our (not yet renovated) new home and it was an incredible capstone to an eventful year. I hope everyone is having a good holiday, whatever that may look like for you. I know this isn’t always an easy and “joyful” time of year for everyone, and I acknowledge that. It’s rarely picture perfect — despite what we see on Insta — and that’s ok. David and I still have dishes to do, laundry to wash, and emails to return… but right now I’m just going to enjoy the view in front of me.

Different night, same me. Except tonight I’m celebrating The Rise and Rise of a Midwestern Princess. Thank you Chappel Roan for giving me the soundtrack that I didn’t even know I needed right now in these turbulent times. It might be 25 years since I came out, but even today your words hit home. (It doesn’t hurt that one of your music videos was filmed in my college town of Springfield MO) Young, scared teenage Chris had no idea that one day he would be in this pool in Palm Springs enjoying this view and this life. So let’s just keep on dancing at the Pink Pony Club and let’s keep gaying it forward and keep making the world a better, safer, more inclusive and more beautiful place. Here’s to all the other midwestern princesses out there!
