The 1963 complex, built in 6 phases by Alexander Construction Company, was designed by Dan Palmer and William Krisel and developed by Fey Construction Company. The name Estrella Moderna, Spanish for Modern Star, comes from the breeze block on the front of the home, which forms a modern interpretation of an eight-point star. In

side the home, the geometric rooflines, vaulted ceilings, and clerestory windows create another eight points, floating above, allowing light to fill the space. The eight-pointed star symbolizes hope and guidance, and Native Americans referred to it as the Hope symbol (or as Star Knowledge) when represented inside a circle. The eight points are significant for achieving balance, and was used to help mark events to come based on celestial alignments, providing hope for the future. Alexander Construction Company was one of the most prominent tract home builders in Palm Springs, and William Krisel one of the most prominent architects contributing to the housing boom of the 1950s and 1960s.
