The original frame is on the bottom, the new frame is on the top. The original frame was probably done by the artist taking tonal and color ways from the painting. The problem with doing that is the loss of contrast from the frame. Putting a white frame around the painting allowed all the subtle color shifts to come through. Also the overall feel of the painting is brighter in the white frame.
