Catedral do Brasília 1970

The national cathedral of Brazil was designed by Oscar Niemeyer, engineered by Joaquin Cardozo, and completed in 1970. The cathedral is a hyperboloid structure constructed from 16 concrete columns, weighing 90 tons each.

We walk under the reflecting pool through a dark tunnel to emerge inside the brilliant stained glass roof of the church.

There can be as many as 4,000 worshipers!

"Chapel at Ronchamp 1955" // https://www.robedleywelborn.com/warehouse/art_print_products/221114-ronchamp

A view from my world into that of Corb.

Notre-Dame du Haut (Our Lady of the Heights) is a hilltop chapel in Ronchamp, in the far southeast of France just a few klicks from Bern, Switzerland.

Built in 1955, it is one of the most loved works of the Franco-Swiss architect Le Corbusier.

In 2016 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List because of its importance to the history of Modernism.

At the time the new building was being constructed Corb was no longer interested in the International Style, if, indeed, he ever had been. He knew that his style had become grittier and more sculptural.

He also realized when he visited the site that he couldn't call for heavy construction machines because access was too difficult. It was hand-built with wheelbarrows, shovels, and hammers dragged up the hill from the road far below!

From my collection, this is: "The Replicants Return"

Shop At: https://www.robedleywelborn.com

The Petersen Automotive Museum, on the Wilshire Miracle Mile in Santa Monica, witnesses the return of the Balde Runner replicants. All its occupants have fled, except for this one lonely gal, who stands in the middle of the street to welcome her mates.

Where do you spend the most time? Does the art in that room actually reflect how much time you spend there?

The spaces we use most deserve the most thought.

On my mind lately: "Sonoma Beach Trees"

Savings & Loan 1961

The second Palm Springs Coachella Valley Savings and Loan building was designed by E. Stewart Williams, as was the first, and built in 1961.

It's at 499 S. Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs and is well preserved and still being used as a bank, by Chase.

Its front porch is a row of upside-down arches, reminiscent of Oscar Niemeyer's Alvorada Palace in Brasilia, built in 1957.

Here is a question worth sitting with: what do you actually see when you walk into your own home?

Not what is there, but what do you still notice? What draws your eye?

What have you stopped seeing because it has been there so long?

"African Queen" and the online art gallery is here, if you need to switch things up.

There is a format that changes how a work reads on a wall, not just how it looks, but how it feels in a room.

Metal prints have a clarity and a presence that is different from anything else.

No frame is competing for attention. Just the work, direct. It is a format worth considering if you want something that holds up over time.

"Welcome to Palm Springs - Come on In!" // https://www.robedleywelborn.com/warehouse/art_print_products/230831-parker

Welcome to Palm Springs – come on in!

In 1961 cowboy singer Gene Autry tuned his Melody Ranch to quarter his California Angels baseball team for their spring training. That’s why the major highway that ends beside it is called Gene Autry Trail.

In 1998 TV talk show host Merv Griffin bought it and named it the Givenchy Spa after its swanky French designer.

Then in 2003 it became the Parker Hotel when its new owner splashed out $27 million on the glamorous 70s-style Jonathan Adler remodel that we see now.
