My daughter encouraged me to do a thing. It wasn't easy.
The house burned, the town burned, lost the business, my brain was foggy, there was trauma, depression, 5 addresses in 3 yrs, RV life, injuries, and knitting was so hard let alone designing anything.
I had to get a job which meant less wallowing and having to actually leave the house...and wear pants.

Then Kezziah acquired, rebranded, and started dyeing yarn. "Mama, would you please make something" was just the nudge I needed to try again.
A brand new kit for featuring the Harvest Festival Cowl released today! While you are there check out the other beautiful yarns she has been creating.

what’s included: 2 Skeins of Bulky 100% super wash merino wool and code to get the “Harvest Festival Cowl” knitting pattern FREE with Purchase!!

I keep forgetting to post over here. We were in this big transition with moving, rebuilding, not rebuilding fast enough so RV life, and now corona chaos. Last week I put up 3 sock patterns free for a limited time. I am going to offer a few freebies while stuff is crazy so we can (or if you can get curbside pickups and mail delivered yarns).

Sheltered in place. This week (thru Saturday), these 3 patterns are free!

Thankful. This time last year we knew we were homeless. How we would observe the day? Beautiful friends collected us and brought us into their home. Mission Dolores includes a short tribute to Paradise. $1 each pattern sale supports the survivors of the Paradise Camp Fire fire.

The original mittens for I Knit San Francisco
These were really the 1st thing that I "created from scratch" postfire. I had spent months unable to actually get thru a row. There was a moment where I just started at my yarn and needles and I couldn't cast on.

Dolores Mission mittens pulled me out of that numbness.
Thank you to for beautiful colorways that stirred hope.
And to for the opportunity.

So eerie to see this. The dense forest between it and us has always made it seem so much farther out.

2 weeks ago I was packing for a book signing and a trip to Phoenix. I was so excited about knitting on the train.
Life changes so quickly.
Now here we are our town reduced to ashes, counting the memorial services to be held, and trying to get 5 teenagers (2 we borrowed for the night) to learn apartment etiquette. They have lost their homes but the house is filled with laughter as they adjust to the new normal of not knowing where they will sleep next week.
Also people are amazing. I picked up numerous packages from strangers and friends. I have needles, a swift and "yarn caker", and as soon as I have a power cord for the laptop and 20 minutes to breathe, the designing will be back in full swing. (Oh, I do have still have surgery next week so my phone chatter will cease.)

Thank you my friends for reaching out to Paradise. We have 5 generations that have lived here. It holds a lot of memories.

"And so you do the one thing knitters are taught never to do: you slide the stitches off the needle. It feels like a skipped heartbeat or a caught breath. Maybe there is a flash of regret—What are you doing, you could still save this—but it’s such a quick gesture that there’s no going back. For a moment the stitches look naked and silly, those little loops with nothing to give them structure. And then you take the end of the yarn and you pull. Knitters call this “frogging” because of the sound it supposedly makes: rip-it, rip-it, rip-it. “Rip it” sounds to me more like a command, a testament to how good it feels...."

The hardest part of crafting isn’t threading an impossibly tiny needle. It’s not a complicated lace-knitting technique, nor is it working on a loom that is taller than you will ever be. It’s not ca…

I know a lot of people freak out about colourwork, and yes, some of those mittens look rather intricate.
That is why with the sock weight, charted mittens there are also worsted weight mittens that have just a little bit of colourwork.

This is the start of the 2008 pattern I wrote called Noro Mittens. Not very imaginatively named, I know, but I was pretty much knitting everything with noro kureyon yarn back then.

The pattern has been reformatted and is included in 'A Mitten Almanac'.

As we go thru the year of mittens there will be new techniques and varying weights of yarn. There will be afterthought thumbs, thumb gussets and beautiful gussets across the palms!

So dont be afraid to join in. We won't just be warming hands, we will be learning some new techniques and cast ons.
