A Room for Dad 🤎
Some rooms are created for function and some for beauty. This one was created for memories, peace and joy.
This summer, we lost my mom after 59 beautiful years of marriage to my dad.
As our family learns how to move forward without her, I've started working on one of the most personal spaces I've ever designed—my dad's bedroom.
For most of their marriage, Dad graciously let Mom lead when it came to decorating their home. She loved the softer things, especially florals. Dad, on the other hand, liked a more masculine, comfortable feel.
My goal was not to remove the memories or what felt like home but to add a new touch that combined them both.
He has always loved westerns, and lately I've watched him find so much comfort in the old westerns that he and Mom used to watch together. They remind him of a simpler time—and, in their own way, of her.
So we're creating a room that feels more like him.
Warm woods. Classic stripes. Deeper colors. Western artwork. Pieces that feel comfortable, familiar and masculine.
But we're not erasing what was here before. There will still be pieces of Mom. Things they chose together. Memories of the home and life they shared for nearly six decades.
Because moving forward doesn't mean leaving everything behind.
Sometimes our homes need to change with us—holding onto the memories that matter while making room for new joy.
This one is pretty special to me.
