The leaves of some fruit trees that bloomed and leafed out nicely in the spring may wither and drop in June. This can be due to stresses such as excessive rainfall, damaged fruit, or poorly drained soil. "June drop" of excessive fruits (especially peaches) is a natural thinning phenomenon. Hand thinning the fruits on plum, peach, apple and pear trees, leaving space (the width of one fruit) between remaining fruits, can help reduce this leaf drop.

As one vegetable completes its cycle in your veggie garden, pull it out and add to your compost pile. Add fresh compost, homemade or bagged, to the bed before replanting in the same spot. Be sure to add a quality, slow-release, organic fertilizer.

Houseplants should be outside by now, soaking up the fresh air, rain and sunshine. They'll really perk-up during this little summer vacation. If they begin to outgrow their pots, bump them up to a larger size container and refresh the soil using Bumper Crop Gardener’s Gold Potting Soil.

Trellising tomatoes is an excellent way to use vertical space in your garden. By pruning out the side shoots, the tomato vine will grow tall and narrow, allowing for closer spacing, cleaner fruit and ease of harvesting. The edge of a sunny overhang is a great location to secure your trellis or you may create a freestanding structure. Tomato clips make trellising a cinch!

Do you have a climbing rose? Check your support system, as early as possible, to ensure that it is secure for the coming bloom season. Heavy blooms tend to loosen old ties. Climbers are growing quickly now and may require additional ties or clips to keep the plant canes off of the ground.

If you notice streaking in iris foliage, it may be caused by iris borers which then tunnel down and feed on the rhizomes (roots). The leaves and flower stalks may wilt. The best control is prevention. Do not mulch your irises, plant rhizomes high in the planting bed and select full sun sites. If you suspect borers, dig up the rhizomes after bloom, cut off rotted portions, cure, and re-plant.
