How do you make a kitchen bright without making it cold? A new Houzz roundup looks at kitchens that answer it the same way: white paired with wood.

One of them is a kitchen from our Pasadena interior design studio. The couple had already renovated once, and it didn't work for them. A wall cut the kitchen off from the dining area, and a dropped soffit made it feel enclosed. Removing both made the biggest difference. We finished it with rift-cut white oak cabinets and warm off-white walls.

Robert Abbey INC. recently featured our Pasadena carriage house project and took a closer look at the lighting.

The 1908 space was dark and rarely used when we started. Bringing in more daylight changed that, and the Robert Abbey Dolly Table Lamp in Citron found its place at the desk.

Those raised polka dots were the detail that got us.

The kitchen in this Old Town Pasadena condo started with a beige and brown palette.

We introduced decorative glass tile and carried that shift throughout the home with grey wood-look porcelain floors, a stacked stone fireplace, and a softer mix of blue, taupe, and grey.

The changes were simple, but they gave the condo a completely different feel.

Our Pasadena interior design studio transformed this petite 200-square-foot kitchen into a more open, efficient, and inviting space.

By removing the intrusive peninsula, introducing custom lacquer cabinetry and white oak shelving, and concealing the laundry area within the tall cabinetry, we allowed every inch to serve a purpose beautifully.
