I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately about what it means to run a specialty shop like Clay & Twig here in our community. I wanted to share a little look behind the curtain at the reality of small business—something I’ve been feeling pretty deeply this season.
In the retail world, there’s a strategy called a “loss leader”—selling something at cost, or even at a loss, just to bring folks in the door. It’s a smart move for stores with higher ticket items.
But for those of us who specialize in the plants themselves, it’s a different story.
When those kinds of prices become the expectation, it creates a hard path for small, independent garden centers to keep going. Simply put, it’s not a model that sustains a business built on the plants themselves.
That’s why I always want to encourage folks—support your local garden centers and growers when you can.Because in places like this, the plants aren’t a side item.They’re the work.They’re the reason the doors are open.
Everything here has earned its place.

I know there will always be budget options, and I truly understand that every dollar matters. But I also believe there’s a place for quality and for a shop that’s rooted in plants and doing things with care and intention.
