Current state of affairs:

Yesterday I started staining and got the ornamental pieces added back on. Alas, my day job requires that I head to St Paul today, otherwise I would have had the immense satisfaction of seeing this piece completed by this evening. And so it goes…

I’ve got more staining and touching up to do and then the final finish; I’ll be blending in some other tones for warmth. I cannot wait to get the hardware added! 😍 I also need to get my mess cleaned up (aka organized chaos).

So here we are, close to the finish line with the postal desk that I LOVE.

Today my lack of patience got the best of me and I put these two back together. The best choice? Maybe not. This thing is massive, 8 feet tall! I am told this came out of an old store in Bovey, MN.

Someone before me put a new back on this guy and replaced the wood on one of the lower sides. Unfortunately they used a garish red stain. I stripped most of it and will be blending some stain in to match the old patina. I’ve repaired the drawers and will need to reinforce the back with better wood and some serious braces. I already added heavy duty rubber casters so moving this colossus is easier. Not easy, but easier. I also cleaned up the top surface of the lower cabinet (now hidden by the upper piece).

For now, I’m marveling over the original wavy glass remaining intact all of these years and am exceedingly happy that Mason and I were able to put it together without disaster striking.

Happy Sunday!

Tinkering today, and yes - I have been slacking on the furniture front. I finally added a matching escutcheon to the “new” drawer on the postal desk and am getting ready to put the ornamental pieces back in place. As for the store cabinet, I finished repairing the drawers and stripped the icky modern red stain from the side (a replacement piece from a former rehab). I will be blending in different stains to make it look aged like the rest of the piece.

The weather is perfect. It is my favorite time of day for this time of year. This is when inspiration comes. 🌞🔨🗝️

As always, stay tuned -

Sometimes a girl just gets lucky. 🍀 Stumbled upon the original top of the antique store cabinet and brought it home tonight. The owners couldn’t find my contact information, and someone else was supposed to pick it up on Monday (thank God they didn’t show up!). Here we go! Reunited. Sellers are happy, I am happy, and we saved each other’s phone numbers this time.

Sunday. Small things...

Cabinet / Store Counter:

• Repaired the top drawer so it slides smoothly and evenly.
• Doing the same with the middle drawer.
• Adjusted the hinges on the door and added a stopper.

Postal desk:

• Yes…I am using coffee on the top drawer to match it to the tone of the rest of the piece. Years of experimentation have taught me a thing or two, my friends 🤷🏻‍♀️ 😉. Will ultimately be restoring this guy to its original deep rich stain.
• Hardware is ready. Replacement pull to match the originals finally arrived. Found an appropriate (and awesome) latch in my treasure trove to add to the door.

That’s it for now. Music is playing, the weather is a peaceful backdrop. Mason is cleaning the kitchen, and I’m going to keep on keeping on.

Years ago a friend said to me “work smarter, not harder” and I think of her every time I stubbornly decide to take the long way just to see if I can pull it off. Doing this by hand has taken me the better part of the day, but I’m almost there…and then I can start working on the finish / final work on the old postal desk. Fingers crossed for tomorrow. 🤞🏻

“Old things were built to last. They had character. They had charm. They had the quiet confidence of knowing they’d outlive your entire family. Modern things? They die if you look at them wrong…Old things smell like dust and stories. They carry secrets. You don’t own old things, you inherit them…”

Antique Postal Desk -

Finally got around to cutting the boards down, repairing and reassembling the back. I decided to go all in and started to strip the paint off the sides of the drawers. Still working on pesky spots of paint here and there. Oh…and I found some names along the way…

That’s all for now -
