Our Story
Thirty plus years ago, I began collecting rare tropical plants. I obtained plants in our travels to the southern states and from friends and hobbyists I met along the way. I always loved the outdoors; exploring and finding frogs, lizards, salamanders and snakes. This prompted my interest in poison dart frogs later in life, that led to me collecting and breeding several species. Dart frogs and tropical plants go hand in hand, and creating vivariums to house them became my passion.
In 2003, we had a goal to become debt-free and enrolled in Financial Peace University. Part of the program is to generate income in creative ways. This was when we began selling plants on eBay and frogs to other hobbyists in an effort to pay off our debt. It took us 2 years, 10 months to become debt-free, but we did it! It was life-changing! We enjoyed our online plant-selling business. The business was growing and we were meeting other great hobbyists. At this time, we had a small greenhouse in the village where we lived and we housed our frog collection in the summer kitchen. It was a nice setup and business was good.
In 2013, we decided to take the business to the next level and expand. We asked the village council if we could put up a second greenhouse and provided blueprints of our plan. We received a letter back that said we could not move forward with our plan. This prompted us to look for land in the country where we would have the freedom to grow our business. We found just what we needed and purchased our current home in July 2013. I continued to work full time and do my “side job” with plants in the evenings and on weekends. I didn’t realize that almost every morning I was saying that I didn’t want to go to work as I drank my morning coffee. My wife pointed it out (several times) and this discussion resulted in me leaving my job and going “all in” with the greenhouse in September 2015.
This was the best decision of my life. Now I go to work in my own backyard and love what I do every day!
