So, after a bout with covid that put me out of commission for the last couple weeks of December and the first week of the new year, I'm finally making a lot of progress on the hickory fly tying desk.
Had the customer over last week so we could go over a couple of the design features, and we had to make some modifications to the original design so it would work for him.
This project has been, and continues to be a challenge because it is a 100% custom piece, and it's made from solid hardwood, so each step has to be thought out carefully to make sure it's going to work, as well as not have a negative effect on the other features surrounding it. When I say solid hardwood, I mean there is no cabinet grade plywood incorporated in this project. That being said, anytime a project is made of solid wood, we have to take wood movement into consideration, as humidity levels can and will affect the expansion and shrinkage of the wood depending on humidity levels of where the piece is stored or housed. In a nutshell, what that means is that during the summer, wood will expand due to higher humidity levels in the air, and the reverse is true during the drier months of winter.
The bookcase in the background was made about eleven years ago for a friend, and it's in the shop for a "freshening up" of the finish.
