Happy National Cat Day! Celebrating with a delightful embroidery from our archives, made in Woodbury, Connecticut circa 1840. The maker, Ann Elizabeth Bull, used a piece of red homespun fabric that belonged to her grandmother. The family note that accompanied the embroidery tells more of the family history.

And, luckily for us, someone decided to stitch the whole thing onto a giant piece of fabric.

Completed exactly 193 years ago today.

Wouldn’t we love to tell Ann Eliza Scott that her needlework - likely a full length depiction of herself standing next to her house - is still admired today!

Happy National Vermont Day! One day late but better late than never.

An outstanding Vermont sampler from our archives, signed along the bottom, “Wrought by Nancy B. Whitcomb Stockbridge 1823 AE 11.”

Nancy included the name of her teacher directly on her sampler: “Mary Cooper Instructress,” (read at either end of the white fence) and there are two other very similar samplers known to have been worked in Stockbridge, Vermont and under Mary Cooper’s tutelage.

This sampler is now at Shelburne Museum as part of the exhibition, On Point: Needlework from the Garthwaite Family Collection, helping to tell the story of Vermont’s history.
