Star Trek floppy disks are hanging in our client’s house, and it’s one of our favorite things we’ve ever sourced!

When it’s time to choose art, that’s the part we get excited about. It’s where we find out what unique and funky things excite you. For this client, the list included NASA, the moon, skiing, outer space, Nordic gods.

So we called galleries out west and up in Canada and found a piece by Taylor Smith called Celestial Freestyle. It is incredibly funky and unique yet SO perfect for what our clients were asking for. We were so excited to install it in their home ✨

There are 5 things you’ll find in (almost) every project we design, no matter the house or the style!

Our work runs from traditional to modern to eclectic, but a few details stay constant. We commit to color or unique layering of neutrals instead of playing it safe, we prefer working with natural stone that ages well, and we incorporate old and new pieces so a room reads collected instead of decorated. And the millwork and the architecture get just as much attention as the furniture! Every project gets one unexpected move… the detail our clients didn’t see coming, but end up loving.

I never take for granted the homes we’re invited into or the trust our clients place in us to help bring their vision to life. There’s a lot of hard work behind every beautiful space, but walking through a finished MPD home is still one of those pinch-me moments. Feeling incredibly grateful to do what we do, with clients who trust us to dream big alongside them.

As a client you don’t always know exactly what you want or need, and that’s kind of the whole point of hiring us. After 20+ years, we tend to know what someone wants before they can even put it into words, so reading between the lines has become a bit of a specialty.

Welcome to my new series, Demystifying Design. Follow along to keep up with every episode!

I’m so excited to finally start this because people have been asking. Over my 20+ years in this industry, I’ve heard every myth and truth there is when it comes to interior design, and I started this series to take the mystery out of all of it. This is Episode 1: the truth about how designers actually charge you✨

Here’s the truth: it really does differ from designer to designer. But it usually comes down to three ways of charging. A flat fee, a hybrid of fees plus hourly, or fully hourly. After many years, I’ve found the method that works best for us is hourly. It allows us to do our best work and get the best possible outcome, without anyone paying for time they didn’t use.

So before you hire anyone, ask how they charge and what’s included. The right designer will always be upfront with you.

This or that, Michele edition. A few of our picks and why:

Color is what makes a home feel alive and personal, and it’s the thing we’re known for.

Matching every metal can read a little flat and dated. Mixing them looks collected and intentional, like your home came together over time.

Plaster, grasscloth, a beautiful wallcovering. Texture adds a depth and warmth that paint alone just can’t give you.

Leather is timeless, it’s rich, and it only gets better with age.

You know us for color. But here’s a plot twist: one of our favorite kitchens we’ve ever designed was primarily black. 🖤

This one was all about the clients. They wanted sexy, sophisticated, and a little bit masculine, so we leaned all the way in. Rich black cabinetry, leather hardware for that unexpected texture, and brass accents in the hood to warm it all up. Even the pizza kitchen got its own moment, with a gorgeous leather finish stone running right up the back.

Proof that neutral doesn’t mean boring. Sometimes the boldest choice is taking the color out!
