In the fall, we label our dahlias.
As flower farmers, we not only grow beautiful flowers, but we have the opportunity to sell seeds and tubers as well.
There are so many steps when it comes to tubers. We plant, pinch, fertilize, support, water, harvest the blooms, but also verify that what we had labeled when we planted actually bloomed the same…so that this fall, we can cut back, dig up, divide, store and sell in the spring.
Each year I have added to my collection. Some years I’ve added in bulk volumes…25 of this or 25 of that…but unfortunately that route introduced viruses to my collection. So, I’ve culled and built up my collection again and I’ve realized it’s okay to add varieties 1-5 at a time because those tubers will multiply year over year.
So friends, hello from my office. I have 1200+ dahlias to verify in the next 27 days. I’ve got this…we get things done in 10 minute chunks of time, right!
