this is definitely what you should show people when they ask if it can be cheaper.
This really resonates with me. In the studio we sell the works of local artists. To date, we have only sold 1 painting, but I get asked ALL THE TIME, “why are these paintings so expensive?” The short answer is because they’re not mass produced and printed on sheets … The long answer is “These artists purchase the materials, then spend upwards of 50, 60, 70 hours or more on 1 piece getting it just right. If they didn’t spend that long creating it, they still spend years, sometimes their whole lifetimes developing the skills it takes to create that 1 piece of art.
You can go to the museum and look at a painting that is simply painted 1 color, spattered with paint or blocks of colors and because it’s in a museum see the value in it, but then come to a small boutique type place selling the works of local, talented no name artists and think $250 is “expensive” for a piece that took that artist 50 hours or more to create. Would you work 50 hours for $200?” Maybe you don’t like the style, but it doesn’t mean it’s not worth every penny and more.
Please don’t judge the value of a carefully painted masterpiece (whether it’s your style or not) against something you can buy at TJ Maxx, there is no comparison
Same goes for pottery, “why is this mug so expensive?” Do you know to make a mug (that’s not a mold) there are SEVERAL steps involved. It has to be thrown, semi dried, trimmed, add a handle, slow dried, fired, glazed and fired again, it doesn’t all happen in one day, it takes several weeks, and pottery doesn’t always come out perfectly, pieces crack, things break off… and then that piece is garbage
Please don’t question the artisans making these things, they’re not becoming millionaires off their $30 mugs and $250 paintings. If you don’t like it move on without comments, they’re just doing something they love.
They take pride in the things they make and whether you like it or not, I think you can certainly appreciate everything that goes in to it.
