Kit's Knits

Kit's Knits Knitting, Crochet, Arts & Crafts! My name is Katie. When I'm not teaching kids the wonders of Science, I like to craft.

I knit, crochet, embroider, sew (a little), paint, and do all sorts of arts and crafts projects. Pictures of all of my completed projects can be found on this page. I can make almost anything, and am happy to take requests. If you see something online, I can most likely duplicate it. If you have questions, please feel free to leave a comment or a message!

I want to thank everyone working around the clock to help rescue flood victims, restore power, pump water, and donating to victims of Harvey.
I have been cooped up in my house since Friday evening. My garage has flooded three times, but fortunately, the water never reached my house. I have gotten maybe 20 hours of sleep combined over the past 5 nights, and am running on fumes, like everyone else. There are no words to describe what it feels like to watch water steadily rise toward your front door through the night, knowing the torrential rain won't stop for hours.

Ophelia and I send our thanks, and our thoughts are with everyone suffering today.

One of the many benefits of being a crafter...

You have something to keep you physically and mentally occupied during a Hurricane! Harvey is flooding my area, and the rain has only just begun. At least I have something to work on!

Wow! After a 2 year break, I'm back in the crafting game, and ready to post my occasional crafting shenanigans. I'm going to work on updating everything soon, but for now...

I have recently attempted dying some wool yarn. Expression Fiber Arts makes a BEAUTIFUL herb inspired kit, and I loved it so much, I decided to replicate it. I think I did a pretty decent job for a novice dye-er! I deeply respect those that hand-dye yarn, but I couldn't justify $70 for a shawl worth of yarn.

Hope you are all having a lovely day!

I made a valiant attempt to do the whole "sharpie tie dye" thing that's been floating around facebook. The results were...lame to say the least.

However, I was determined to have tie-dye shoes. And thus, real tie dye was used, and the results are amazing!

Secondly, for those of you who are here in appreciation of Itty Bitty Felicity, I finally got around to making her a Twitter! Back in the day, someone on the internet had a Pocket Edward (from Twilight) and had adventures with him, and took pictures. So I figured, why not do this with IBF? I'm just getting started, but hopefully we can have lots of adventures this summer while I'm 'off work.'

T-shirt quilt is officially finished! I'm really happy with how it turned out!

For my next project...something a little less art, and a little more work-related!

Somehow, I managed to do such a good job with my 7th graders last year, they decided to move me down to 5th grade! I'll be in a grade level that actually gets state tested, so that's nerve-wracking (it'll only be my 2nd year teaching, after all) but I'm ridiculously excited.

I've been prepping for next year already. Whoever said teacher's don't work during the summer...

Here are a few of my projects.

1. I discovered that, by some miracle, my Joanns now carries Doctor Who fabric! I took advantage of this and bought some Exploding Van Gogh Tardis fabric, and made a bulletin board!

2. I'm stepping up my Interactive Science Notebook game this year, and needed an anchor chart to remind us all what items go where.

3. I plan on using dry erase boards (or at least a white piece of paper inside a sheet protector), and needed some wipes. Joanns was having a huge sale on their fleece. So naturally, I had to buy 8 different prints to make wipes!

Hope you all are having a great summer!

First project on my list: T-shirt quilt!
I'd actually started this a year ago, and never finished.

Today, I stitched all squares together, washed them, then attempted to stitch the 3 layers together (front, batting, back).

I'm not sure quite what I did, but the layers didn't end up facing the right way...

Excuse me while I drown myself in Chocolate Pie. Having to remove all of those stitches is a pain that warrants sweets.

At long last, the school year has come to an end! Goodbye, 7th graders! Ms. Lynch will miss you all.

I've had a rocking summer already, and we're only 5 days in.
I spent the weekend at Dallas Comic Con (again) and did some spectacular things.

I met Nathan Fillion, Billie Piper, and Karen Gillan! Took pictures with them too.

I've got a lot of artsy projects coming up now that I have free time. Stay tuned!

I genuinely couldn't resist making a second Itty Bitty Felicity. This one, however, is going in fan mail to my spirit animal herself, Miss Emily Bett Rickards. Now all she needs is a tiny tablet...

It's been quite an interesting time lately.

My hairdresser, who also cuts my mom and aunt's hair, has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. She requested a hat as she's losing her hair. I played around with a number of designs, but this one was unique and challenging, so I figured, why not?

A second project (cause I can never be working on just one) is my Baby Blanket for my upcoming Niece or Nephew. Since they're not finding out the gender, I wanted something gender neutral. I started with the squares from an old Moogly Afghan CAL and I believe these will make up the bulk of the blanket. I also found the lovely stained glass pattern, and I think this may be the center of the blanket. It took AGES to crochet, and I adapted it in the circle>square phase but I think it turned out cool.

Last but not least is a project I've been working on since NOVEMBER. I took a break on it for a few weeks, but I'm so close to being done! Technically, it was a Christmas present to my mother, but at this rate it'll end up being a Mother's day present ; )

We found this AMAZING wool jacket in Ireland. Since mom doesn't wear wool, I bought some soft acrylic and made a similar jacket. I have the back, both sides, and one sleeve done. All that's left is the rest of the second sleeve, stitching the sides up, and the collar. For my first large project, it's turning out great!

I hope you all have a Lovely Easter, if you celebrate. I'll be lying in bed, bemoaning the loss of my Wisdom Teeth and exercising my knitting muscles to distract me from the pain!

Welcome new followers, it's great to have you!

Quick update to my last post. Dallas Comic Con was a BLAST! Stephen was beyond kind and friendly. I can't wait to go back in May to meet Nathan Fillion and Jenna Coleman!

I also made Itty Bitty Felicity a companion. Meet Itty Bitty Oliver! Next up is probably Diggle, then maybe Arsenal and Black Canary.

It's been HOW long? Yikes, I feel as if I've fallen off the face of the earth. Got a job as a 7th grade Science Teacher and have been super busy.

I did, however, make time over my weekend to prepare for my next adventure: Dallas Comic Con. Any Arrow fans out there? Felicity (and Emily Rickards) is my Spirit Animal. Wish she was going to the Con, but at least I get to meet Stephen Amell!
