The other use of color that has been coming on strong for a few years is the use of rich, dark hues that evoke a cocooning effect. Dark tones like raisin, deep greens, purples and blues have a calming yet welcoming effect. Clients are now requesting these tones in cabinetry, tile, bathrooms, bedrooms and dining rooms. Earthy greens, vibrant greens, pinks and turquoise are also popular and punctuate any darker or neutral hues beautifully.

- Part 2

Cozy neutrals are back. We are seeing this reflected in kitchens with use of lighter woods such as Alder, White Oak and Maple with a light stain or natural. Countertops are still light, but in softer whites, beiges and even black, which adds amazing contrast and a grounding effect, is making a comeback.

- Scandinavian Kitchen - Part 4 (See the before photo in slide 2.)

In the small powder bath, this small space now packs a modern punch with floor to ceiling white Herringbone tile and a deep green floating vanity. The Mid Century sconces give this bathroom a ton of style.

- Part 1

This fall, we’re looking at kitchen and bath colors. People are asking for warmer “cozy” neutrals. Think creamy off-whites, Camels, rich browns, sienna and spicy earth tones (yes they are back), mustards, coppery tones and golds. Taupe is still very popular as are mushroom and stone colors. Warmer grays are still popular, but not as much as the last few years. Since people are spending more time at home, the neutrals offer a more livable palette and are easy to decorate around.

- Scandinavian Kitchen - Part 3 (Before on slide 2)

All existing hardwoods and dark 70’s brick in the entry were replaced with 4” natural white oak hardwoods, which further connected and updated the kitchen and adjacent rooms. The new kitchen layout gave way to a large island and more useful storage and a better flow.

The “Sea Serpent” blue on the island is complemented with the stained Alder and white for a fresh element. Open cubbies in Alder cubbies and white Kanso mosaic tile from Ann Sacks grouted in black all add to a warm modern vibe for this young family.

- Scandinavian Kitchen - Part 2 (See before on slide 2)

From the cramped layout and closed off feel in the kitchen to heavy texture and original 1970’s décor in the Powder bath, it was time for a change.

The main wall between the kitchen and family room was removed and the kitchen entry was widened which made the kitchen feel more integrated and brighter.

This 1972 NW Contemporary home had great potential from the start with interesting architecture and West Hills Portland location with mature landscaping. The kitchen and powder bath lacked style and needed serious updating. From the cramped layout and closed off feel in the kitchen to heavy texture and original 1970’s décor in the Powder bath, it was time for a change.
