Willow & Mabel Garden Co. Willow & Mabel Garden Co I am an English transplant living outside of Seattle, USA. Well, it did not beat us. I am very nervous and very excited too.

For most of my life I have enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers but just as a hobby and a way to relax after a day at the office. A couple of years ago, my husband and I and our two teenage boys moved from our beautiful self-built house into a 100 year old dilapidated farm house on 5 acres of land. I think that everyone thought that we were crazy and had taken on a DIY project bigger than even my carpenter husband could tackle. My husband and two teenage boys, with help from lots of friends, transformed that dilapidated farm house into a wonderful, welcoming home that we are all so happy living in. Last year I was flicking though a magazine and came across an article about two women who gave up their office jobs and followed their dream of becoming farmer-florists. I read, and re read this article and thought how I would love to do that. The magazine article floated around my head for weeks thinking about it. I mentioned it to my husband, who never shy’s away from a challenge and he said “what are you waiting for? Do it!”

So here I am making my first tentative steps towards achieving my dream. The fear of failure keeps churning in my stomach, but as my husband says, “what is the worst that can happen? – We will have a lovely flower garden and green house.” I cannot afford to dive into this as a full time project but I am going to make baby steps towards that goal with the help and support of my family. So that is how Willow & Mabel Garden Co. started – which is lovingly named after our two Pygmy Goats! Now you can follow my muddy footsteps down this road & see what happens. As I was told recently – “Never die not knowing”.

Wedding Season is officially over. I feel so honored that I was chosen to provide flowers for so many different couples this year all using locally grown flowers either from here on my farm or from local farmers in the area.

Here are some photos from a just a few of the weddings this year. What a magical adventure they were.

I am now meeting with couples for 2027 ~ let’s make it a beautiful wedding together.

The last three weeks have been a lot. Two large weddings and straight into digging up my fields. Both the annuals and dahlias.

I never pretend that I do this on my own. Lately the news in this country has been terrible and I despair at what is happening. But then I step into my field and everything changes. I of course have my Penny who has been with me all summer in the field harvesting. Karin who has filled the shoes of Shannon. Colin who always shows up to help dig dahlias with youth & strength, always good attributes in the field. Dear sweet Syd that always helps with planting and digging dahlias. He brought his friend Jim from church for a couple hours to dig. Jim did not know that was the plan and was wearing a button down shirt & chinos - he turned his shirt inside out so it would not get dirty!! (Did not work)

Then there was Roger from the gym who always says - “if you need help, let me know” - so I did!! He helped rip out my annuals field and to be honest with you he kicked my arse trying to keep up with him!

To all the people I just mentioned, you are the best. We have the field all ready for winter. Community is what makes the world go around and I shall never stop believing that. 🌎

Rhubarb & Custard the perfect collarette dahlia. So charming and sweet. Named after the British dessert or as we say in England pudding. But to be honest I am not a custard fan. But I love it in my flower field.

We did it! Another season in the bag - I think that is year 12…but who’s counting?

I reduced the field size a little year and honestly it was a good choice for my business. I felt somewhat on top of things, well sort of! Penny & I divided tubers, planted tubers, nurtured them and harvested so many. Now the fun part…we cut them down on Monday, wait a week and dig them all….the continuous cycle of the dahlia.

Thank you to everyone that has bought flowers from me this season, I appreciate you so much. To Penny & Shannon my rock stars. I could not do this without you. ✨

This is so hard to believe that today is the last harvest day! The past few weeks have flown by. It is certainly bittersweet. Honestly, the dahlias are still looking amazing. Some have only just hit their stride ~ looking at you Molly Raven! I have to stay strong and stick to my plan.

I am making the most of it and going out and harvesting armloads of flowers just to faff with and enjoy the moment as all too soon I won’t have this bounty.

This next week is full of lasts. The last harvest in the field for the season and next weekend will be my last wedding for the year.

You might think this is a tad early for it to be my last harvest and admittedly the weather here in the Pacific Northwest is gorgeous at the moment, BUT by next weekend we will be in the middle of October and the weather could turn to rubbish in a nano second. A few seasons ago I decided not to wait for the killing frost (last year that was in December- think digging up dahlia tubers and Christmas Wreath Workshops at the same time makes me nauseous) Now I choose the time to pull the plug that works for my schedule. This will give me time to clean up all the field, maybe take a day or two off before I start heading into Christmas Wreath season!

One of my favorite photos from an evening in the field with Jess Vallance

Sitting in a 1940’s Jeep W***y chit chatting I saw the most beautiful image in the rear view mirror. Sometimes you just have to stop and look what is around you, it might just be the small things.

I have to admit this was the third attempt to faff with these flowers. Life has been more than a little hectic recently but we got there. We are coming towards the end of the season where the nights are cooler and the days are shorter which invariably turns the soft buttery yellow dahlias into the horrible highlighter yellow color. I do like W**e Eyed Jill dahlias so it was worth it. The stars of the show however are the sweet Rudbeckia triloba. My first season growing them - why have they not been in my field all these years?

Mechanics for this as always, chicken wire.
