Not all portrait traces are created equal.

The difference between a quick auto-trace and a true custom portrait comes down to one thing:
attention to detail

At The Naked Forge, every portrait is manually traced Node to Node by hand — no shortcuts, no one-click filters, and no generic AI auto-tracing.

At The Naked Forge, details matter.

A clean trace is more than just “making it black and white.” It’s about understanding how a design will actually cut, weld, paint, and come to life in metal. Tiny details can make the difference between a frustrating cut file and a finished piece that turns heads.

This Porsche GT3 RS project is a perfect example:
Starting with the actual car photo
Creating a clean vector trace
Adjusting line weights and flow
Preserving the aggressive body lines and character
Making it plasma/laser friendly while still looking sharp

The finished artwork keeps the soul of the original car while becoming something a fabricator can actually use.

From Idea to Cut-Ready Reality

A cool picture on the internet is not the same thing as a plasma-ready design.

At The Naked Forge, a huge part of what I do is taking ideas, sketches, AI images, blurry screenshots, or “can you make something like this?” concepts and turning them into clean, machine-ready vector files that actually cut correctly.

Things I look for when designing:
Proper bridge placement
Floating centers that won’t fall out
Kerf compensation
Structural strength
Clean node work
Balanced detail vs. cut time
Readable text and smooth curves
Designs that look good BOTH on screen and in steel

A design can look amazing digitally but become a nightmare once heat, metal movement, torch width, and real-world cutting come into play.

That’s where experience matters.
Whether it’s:
Custom signs
Fire pits
Headache racks
Business logos
Ranch brands
Layered metal art
CNC plasma or laser files

…I love turning ideas into something people can physically create.

Designing is honestly one of my favorite parts of the process. There’s something satisfying about solving the puzzle between art and fabrication.

What most people don’t realize is… not all artwork is usable artwork.

The tree on the bottom right was the original. It looks great, but it’s not a true vector design—which means it won’t cut clean, scale properly, or work for production.

So instead of forcing it, I rebuilt it the right way.

The top images are fully vector:
✔ Clean shapes
✔ Layered color
✔ Shadows and highlights built intentionally
✔ Production-ready

No shortcuts—just understanding how things actually need to be built to work in the real world.

This is the difference between something that looks good on a screen… and something that can actually be made.

This is one of the most common issues I see with plasma cuts—especially on detailed designs like trees.

If you’re cutting on the line (no offset), the kerf is eating into your design. That’s why everything starts looking thicker, softer, and you lose those fine details.

Using the correct inside/outside offsets keeps your lines where they’re supposed to be—so your parts come out clean, sharp, and true to the design.

This isn’t a material issue.
It’s not a file issue.
It’s almost always a toolpath/offset setting issue.

I’m not here to sell anything—just sharing what I see over and over again to help you get better results.

If your cuts look heavy or you’re losing detail… check your offsets first 👍
