The 3” Doorbell, which we have been making and selling from our shop in Prospect Harbor for years, is now available online at usbells.com. It is a simple mid sized doorbell with clean lines and a rich pleasing tone.

“Favorite” Bells ~ Favorite is in quotes because when I asked everyone at the shop what their favorite bell was, nobody could give me just one. They would start to say something like “Oh maybe the 3 inch wind bell, but I do really like the deep tone of the 6 inch. And then, “I like the combination of sounds in the Triple and I really like the decorative detail and sound of the 5 inch wind bell and on and on until they had pretty much listed all of the bells that we make.

I guess this is nice in a way, because it means that all of our bells have something that appeals to someone, whether it’s the tone, shape or overall design.

So instead, maybe I should say: Here is a sampling of some of our bells.....
Small Winter Bell, 3” Wind Bell, Triple Wind Bell, 5” Wind Bell and the 6” Wind Bell

At home, Tim and I have a Double Wind Bell mounted on our woodshed. The woodshed sits slightly uphill (Nice for bringing a wheelbarrow full of wood down to the house!) on the path to the gardens. We can’t see the bell from the house but we can hear it when the west wind blows and it’s always there to greet us when we walk by on our way up back or to get a load of wood. The bells are kind of fun that way.

The Double Wind Bell is one of my favorites of the smaller bells that we make. I’ve always liked the curved shapes of the bracket and how the two bells compliment each other in tone.

“The Pour” at US Bells Foundry. This video shows how our bells are made by pouring bronze into sand molds, a process called sand casting. The crucible, containing 90 lbs of molten bronze, at a temp. of 2150°F is removed from the furnace and floating slag is skimmed from the surface. The metal must be poured smoothly but quickly into each mold to assure the castings do not “freeze” before they are full. After a few minutes the metal sets up, weights and “Jackets” are removed and the molds are dropped into wheelbarrows, breaking apart to reveal the new castings.

From here the bells get cleaned up in our finishing shop and assembled. In the foundry new molds will be made for the next pour. It’s an exciting process that requires a lot of physical work and care, a craft that allows us to create beautiful sounding and long lasting wind and door bells.
