Not everything worth restoring is made of wood or covered in fabric.

Sometimes it’s a piece like this brass elephant. Something unique, decorative, sentimental, or simply too good to give up on.

When it arrived, years of oxidation had darkened the surface, hiding almost all of the warmth and detail in the brass. After careful cleaning and polishing, it is ready to sparkle again! 🐘✨

Furniture may be a big part of what we do, but it’s far from the whole story. If you have a piece you love and aren’t quite sure who restores something like that, there’s a good chance it’s worth asking us.

One of the things we love about having so many different specialties in our shop is having craftspeople who have spent years learning their particular work.

Wood restoration, upholstery, caning, carpentry, finishing, and so much more--each requires its own materials, techniques, problem-solving, and experience. Our artisans have spent years, and in some cases decades, developing those skills and continuing to refine them with every piece that comes across their bench.

That’s a big part of what we want people to experience at the Antique Craftsman Showcase.

On November 14th, you can walk through the shop, meet the craftspeople behind the work, watch them in action, and ask them questions about the skills they’ve spent so long learning!

We hope you’ll come meet them for yourself!

Same piece, completely different personality!

This settee was beautiful in its warm gold-and-cream upholstery, but the new fabric gives it an entirely different feel. With a raised botanical pattern in soft greens and blues and a complementary blue fabric wrapping the back, it has completely transformed.

Nothing about the shape had to change for the whole piece to feel new!

Sometimes the right upholstery doesn’t just refresh a piece, it completely changes its character.

Only one month to go!

Most of the time, you see our work when the restoration is finished but at the Antique Craftsman Showcase, you'll get to see what happens before the “after!”

On November 14, we’re opening our workshop for an afternoon of craftsmanship, restoration, and the stories behind the work. You’ll have the chance to see projects and techniques up close, meet the artisans who do this work every day, and learn more about the skills that go into restoring pieces that might otherwise be lost.

If you've ever wondered what really happens inside a restoration workshop, this is your chance to come take a look!

Some people just make it look EASY! 🧵

Watching our artisan carefully miter the corners in this cushion’s piping is oddly satisfying! Every fold, cut, and stitch right where it needs to be.

He makes us want to run home and break out the sewing machine…until we remember he’s the expert for a reason! 😂

Remember this secretary and bookcase hutch?

We shared it earlier in the restoration process, when removing its very dark finish revealed the delicate inlays and Federal-style details that had been hiding underneath. Now we finally get to share the finished piece!

With the restoration complete, the warm wood grain, fine inlay work, decorative interior, and beautiful writing surface can all be appreciated together again.

From the outside, it’s an elegant piece of furniture. Open the writing desk, though, and there’s even more craftsmanship waiting inside!

It’s always satisfying to see a restoration come together—but even better to see the finished piece back home and ready for its next chapter.

At first, hand caning can look surprisingly loose—but that’s part of the process.

As the first strands are woven across this settee, they need enough flexibility for the remaining cane to pass through them. With each new layer, more strands cross and interlock, gradually adding tension and strengthening the entire weave.

By the time the pattern is complete, those once-loose strands have become a tight, unified surface that provides both strength and support.

Watching that transformation happen one strand at a time is one of the fascinating parts of hand caning—and on a settee this size, there are a lot of strands!

Mark your calendars! The Antique Craftsman Showcase returns Saturday, November 14th!

For one afternoon, we’ll open the doors to our workshop and invite you to see craftsmanship up close, meet the artisans behind the work, and hear from guest speakers in preservation, restoration, and traditional craft.

There will be plenty to see throughout the shop, including a very special 1907 Franklin automobile restoration we can’t wait to share!

There’s a reason French polishing has been used by craftspeople for generations.

Despite the name, French polish isn’t a product but a traditional finishing technique. Shellac is applied by hand in many thin layers using a polishing pad, gradually building a smooth, lustrous surface with beautiful depth and clarity.

It takes patience, a practiced hand, and plenty of repetition, but the result can bring out the richness and character of the wood in a way that’s hard to miss.

Want to see the technique up close and learn it firsthand? Master craftsman Floyd Rosini will be teaching a three-part French Polishing Workshop through HRA beginning October 5th.

Sometimes a new upholstery choice can completely change the way you see a piece.

This vintage chair arrived in green upholstery and left with an entirely different look. Rich brown leather gives it a warmer, more refined feel while still letting the chair’s original character come through.

Same chair, new personality—and a great example of just how much the right upholstery can transform a piece.
