With a huge passion for lighting design and creativity, Joe sees things differently thru his outdoor lighting designs. I see a lot of not great lighting installations and have even walked or driven thru neighborhoods with potential clients to educate them as to the difference by asking what they see and what they liked or disliked before showing my thoughts for their project.
Many outdoor lighting people simply sell a cookie cutter type product, lighting a few trees with a single lighting fixture sometimes way too brightly.
By properly lighting a similar tree with several lights properly placed and even one or two perhaps up in the tree my clients are usually blown away by how different that looks including the fact they can view that tree from inside their residence.
Joe says, at Lite Visions Landscape Lighting, we create theatrical scenes for our clients, sometimes they might view a completely different experience from a first floor bedroom as an upstairs office or a patio view.
We understand our clients have this unique residence and landscaping that they worked hard to obtain and create, and I am grateful they chose me to illuminate their living space and am very passionate about creating a unique atmosphere for them to relax and enjoy in the evening hours as the sun sets.

From Raleigh Stages to National Tours — And Now Luxury Landscape Lighting

Lighting has been my profession since I was 18 years old.

I started in Raleigh working with local and regional bands and production crews — loading in shows, climbing trusses to focus fixtures overhead, running spotlights at amphitheaters, and learning the fundamentals of focus, shadow, beam control, and atmosphere.

I learned from some of the best lighting designers in the business — not just what they did, but why they did it.

From there, I toured with regional bands and went on to national productions as a lighting technician working with Tim McGraw, Joan Jett, Alan Jackson, Three Doors Down, Kool & the Gang, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and many more.

From small venues to arenas and stadium shows, one truth remained constant:

Light shapes emotion.
Light directs attention.
Light defines the experience.

Today, as founder of LITE VISIONS Landscape Lighting, I apply that same discipline to homes throughout Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary — and along the North Carolina coast.

I do things differently.

I specialize in low-lumen, dark-sky-friendly techniques.
I use premium brass fixtures and high-CRI LEDs because quality matters.
Manufacturers reached out when they learned I was launching LITE VISIONS — they understood the level of precision I expect.

Most importantly, I care about my clients. Every project is personal.

Recently, LITE VISIONS was honored to be included in Masters of Landscape Lighting, recognizing designers shaping how outdoor spaces are experienced after dark.

This isn’t trend lighting.
It’s lighting shaped by decades of experience.

And when lighting has been your life’s work — it shows.

Signs, signs everywhere in sight—most too bright with a big old light!
I can’t read your sign… because it’s too bright.

A sad—but all too true—reality.

So many businesses invest significant time and money into beautifully designed signage—custom fonts, premium materials, thoughtful branding, and even attractive hardscaping—only to have it undermined at night by poor lighting.

All too often, an electrician installs one or two oversized, overly bright fixtures aimed directly at the sign. The result? Light-colored signs get washed out, drivers are hit with harsh glare, and the lighting draws attention for all the wrong reasons.

Proper sign lighting is about restraint, precision, and respect for the design. Carefully aimed, low-level illumination allows a sign to be read clearly without overpowering it or blinding anyone nearby. The goal is balance, legibility, and professionalism—not brightness for brightness’ sake.

At Light Visions Landscape Lighting, we don’t do a lot of commercial work—but when we do, our clients truly appreciate the difference thoughtful lighting makes. Good lighting should support the message, not compete with it.

A Journey of Light — From Concert Arenas to Carolina Gardens

My lighting story goes back to 1979 in Raleigh, when I first stepped behind the scenes and fell in love with the art and precision of lighting. I worked with several lighting companies throughout the Raleigh area and eventually launched my own lighting company, designing systems for concerts, festivals, and theatrical productions in the days when everything was analog, hands-on, and problem-solving in real time.

In the 1990s, my career took me on the road with Bandit Lites out of Nashville — one of the top three touring lighting companies in the world. Touring at that level teaches you quickly how to troubleshoot instantly, think creatively under pressure, and deliver an unforgettable visual experience for audiences who expect perfection every night.

Those decades of designing and running live production lighting shaped how I see light today — it’s not just illumination; it’s emotion, depth, contrast, and storytelling.

Now, through LITE VISIONS Landscape Lighting, I bring that same artistic mindset to outdoor environments — using shadows, texture, and subtle low-lumen lighting to transform architecture, trees, and pathways into scenes that evoke feeling and create a sense of arrival.

From the concert stage to your backyard oasis — I still approach every project like opening night. The curtain rises the moment the sun sets.

🌙✨ From Concert Stages to Moonlit Gardens: The Story Behind LITE VISIONS Landscape Lighting ✨🌙

For more than three decades, I’ve lived a life guided by light — from the high-energy intensity of concert stages to the serene glow of beautifully lit gardens. My 35+ years in lighting have shaped not just a career, but a way of seeing the world… one scene, one shadow, and one beam of light at a time.

My journey started under the brilliant bulbs of concert rigs and Broadway marquees. As a young lighting technician, I spent my early years on the road with regional bands like The Embers, Nantucket, and Glassmoon, learning the craft from the ground up. That path soon led to touring with national artists including Alan Jackson, Tim McGraw, Whitney Houston, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and many more — working alongside some of the best lighting designers in the business.

Those years taught me how light can create emotion… how it can tell a story… how it can transform a moment into a memory. That stage-lighting intuition is something no traditional landscape lighting company can replicate.

When I retired from touring and founded LITE VISIONS Landscape Lighting, I brought that entire artistic background home to Raleigh. Instead of lighting performers, I now illuminate homes, gardens, architectural features, and outdoor living spaces — creating nightscapes that feel warm, natural, and visually stunning.

Great lighting is never about brightness. It’s about balance, restraint, and mood. I design with soft, low-lumen illumination that highlights what matters — the texture of a stone wall, the silhouette of mature trees, the curve of a pathway, the shimmer of a water feature — while leaving other areas intentionally dark to create depth, drama, and emotion.

Just like a Broadway stage or a Disney production, the magic often comes from what you don’t light.

Homeowners often tell me I’m a “true lighting artist… his palette is light,” and I take that to heart. Every design is a collaboration — walking the property, understanding how you live in the space, and crafting scenes that come alive after sunset.

One recent project involved replacing an outdated courtyard system with a fully redesigned lighting composition. Rather than overpowering the scene, the new design focused on subtlety — softly illuminating a gateway and water feature, whispering across the brick and branches with a warm, natural radiance. The homeowner later said:

“Joe was a pleasure to work with on our backyard lighting project and designed a lovely lightscape that brings the backyard to life.”

That kind of feedback means everything. It’s why I do what I do.

Today, LITE VISIONS serves clients throughout Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill, and the surrounding areas — creating artistic nightscapes that feel timeless, welcoming, and deeply personal. Every project is built with intention, precision, and the creative touch of someone who spent half a lifetime “painting with light” on some of the biggest stages in America.

Whether it’s a front entry, a courtyard, a garden path, a cluster of old oaks, or a full estate lighting design… my goal is simple:

✨ To make your home look extraordinary after sunset.
✨ To create depth, mood, and atmosphere through artfully placed light.
✨ To give you scenes you’ll enjoy every single night.

If you’d like to see what true lighting artistry can do for your home, I’d love to talk with you.

I once lit up concerts — the grand and the loud,
With smoke and with color that wowed every crowd.
From bars to arenas while working with bands,
I painted with light, with a skilled, steady hand.

But now I bring art to the homes I design,
Where oaks and stone pathways in soft warmth align.
No glare, no harsh fixtures, just balance and grace —
Each garden a stage, every beam in its place.

They say, “That’s the guy who paints light on a tree!”
I smile and reply, “It’s the theatre in me.”
From concerts to porches, from tours to front doors,
I sculpt light like music — the crowd still implores.

So when twilight comes creeping and shadows take flight,
Call LITE VISIONS to paint your world bright.
Because artistry glows where the stage used to be —
And your landscape’s the encore, designed just for thee.

From Arena Tours to Artistic Landscapes

By Joe Yanulevich — LITE VISIONS Landscape Lighting

My career in lighting began long before I ever set foot in a client’s garden. Back in 1984, I was working with a regional production company, handling concert and theatrical lighting for touring bands. One evening while on the road with Firefall, doing a few dates through Georgia, I called a friend in Atlanta. That simple phone call changed everything — it turned into an invitation to join the Kool & The Gang tour that was in town the very next day.

That was my first experience with an arena tour — and what a way to start. Before long, I found myself at Radio City Music Hall, running lights for KC and the Sunshine Band, the opener for our few-night engagement there. It was surreal — I’d grown up listening to their songs at the skating rink and the foosball parlor back home, and now I was lighting their performance on one of the most famous stages in the world.

Those early experiences taught me how light can transform not just a stage, but an entire emotional space. Today, through my company LITE VISIONS Landscape Lighting, I bring that same sense of artistry, rhythm, and atmosphere to outdoor environments — painting with light to create visual experiences that feel every bit as powerful as those arena shows once did.

🌙 It’s Getting Dark Earlier — Don’t Come Home to the Darkness

With the time change and shorter days, the sun is setting closer to 5 p.m. — and for many homeowners, that means arriving home in the dark. Now is the ideal time to think about professionally designed landscape lighting that not only improves safety and visibility but also transforms your property into a stunning nighttime scene.

At LITE VISIONS Landscape Lighting, every design is personally created by owner Joe Yanulevich, a Raleigh native with over 35 years of experience in concert and theatrical lighting for world-renowned artists like Whitney Houston, Joan Jett, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. That same level of artistry and precision now brings residential landscapes to life — using soft, low-lumen illumination to create warmth, depth, and beauty.

✨ We don’t sell cookie-cutter lighting packages — we design with intention, treating every home as a stage and every tree, path, and wall as part of a visual composition.

💡 If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your outdoor lighting, this is the perfect season to experience what true design can do.

The Difference Between Selling Lights and Designing With Light

I was recently called out to repair a small 8-light landscape lighting system on a beautiful Raleigh property. It worked fine — but it barely hinted at the potential this home had after dark.

While I was there, I talked with the homeowner about what his property could look like if the lighting were designed intentionally. I explained how properly placed fixtures could reveal the architecture, bring depth to both sides of the property, and create that warm, welcoming glow homeowners love to see from their windows at night.

That short conversation turned into a full redesign. What started as an 8-light system became a 42-fixture transformation — a scene that now looks like a living painting every evening.

This experience reminded me how often lighting companies focus only on selling fixtures or completing “standard” installs. In many cases, it’s not about greed — it’s about confidence and experience. True lighting design takes vision, artistry, and an understanding of how light shapes texture, space, and emotion.

That’s the difference between simply installing lights and designing with light.

At LITE VISIONS Landscape Lighting, that’s what I do every day — help clients see their homes and landscapes the way they were meant to be seen.

Whether you’re gazing from your kitchen, a patio, or an upstairs office, every window should frame a breathtaking nighttime view. 🌿✨

With 35+ years of professional concert and theatrical lighting experience, I bring the same artistry once used for major performers to private landscapes across Raleigh, Durham, Cary, and Wake Forest — creating depth, texture, and beauty that feels alive at night.

💬 “Joe is an artist with light.”
💬 “Our yard now looks like something out of a magazine — subtle, not harsh.”
💬 “He painted our property with light — it’s magical.”
