We’re taking a quick break from talking about permanent lighting to share something personal and close to our hearts!

Five years ago, my brother, Dave Brown, battled and BEAT leukemia. Today, he’s giving back through his DBO STRONG Charity Golf Tournament, and we’d love to get our Texas OMNI family involved!

Tip of the week: layer your lighting instead of flooding it. Notice how this backyard uses three separate layers - uplights on the trees, recessed color in the covered patio ceiling, and step and pool edge lighting down low. Each layer does one job, and together they give you depth instead of one flat wash of color. The same setup can run warm white for a dinner outside and switch to full color for a party. Shawn mounted his pool cage sconces and ran the wire along the enclosure itself, so nothing had to be trenched underground or buried in a landscape bed. Fewer connections sitting in the dirt and weather means a cleaner install and far less to troubleshoot later.

Tip of the week: light in layers, not all at once.

Notice what's happening in this backyard. The trees get uplight so the canopy reads at night. The waterfall gets its own cool wash so the water has movement. The steps get a low glow so nobody has to guess where the edge is. Three different jobs, one cohesive scene.

Start with the features you actually want people to look at, then fill in the path and step lighting around them. That's how a yard goes from lit to designed.
