Some shots of an '84 Bronco interior we just wrapped up for a customer. This was a roof to floor, full interior make over, with tons of things not shown in these photos here. The customers goal was OEM appearance but spice it up. I like to call it like an OEM+ type of goal. The customer chose a beautiful soft Italian leather similar to the original blue paired with blue Alcantara suede. From there we custom matched and mixed plastic coloring to that leather color right on the workbench.

What is restoration?

We’ve been getting asked this fairly often, and it’s a good question.

Restoration is a complete system of stages that a part goes through—not simply select stages being performed to improve its appearance or address a particular issue.

Some of those stages include:

• Proper disassembly
• Cleaning
• Thorough inspection to identify damage
• Properly executing repairs, from structural failures down to smaller and hidden damage
• Rebuilding or fabricating anything that requires it
• Deep cleaning and chemical preparation for the color coating system
• Re-texturizing repaired areas
• Custom matching and mixing the correct color needed
• Recoloring and refinishing
• Reupholstery, when applicable
• Reassembly
• Any final corrections or finishing touches the part may require

Each of these stages is a task that can absolutely be performed on its own and may accomplish exactly what someone wants done. But performing only selected portions of the process is not restoration—it’s only performing those individual tasks and nothing more.

If something is only reupholstered, it was a reupholstery job. If something is cleaned and recolored, it was recolored or color corrected. If only repairs are performed, it was repaired. None of those services are inherently lesser—they simply aren't the same thing as restoration.

That doesn’t mean every part will require work during every single stage. That’s exactly why inspection is part of the process—to determine what the part actually needs rather than simply skipping stages altogether.

In our shop, everything we restore goes through the process. What needs attention is addressed, what doesn’t is left alone, and no stage is skipped simply because the problem isn’t immediately visible. In fact, a good portion of the repairs performed in our shop are never seen once final assembly is complete. Many are issues that were well hidden from a normal, quick inspection and could have easily been overlooked if the time wasn't spent to thoroughly inspect the part.

That complete process—from what you see to what you don’t—is what we mean when we call something a restoration.

We have talked about finding damages on parts that appear fine to most people.

But today I decided to show a couple of examples that are just the tip or the iceberg...

What looks undamaged isn’t always undamaged.

These photos show the exact same areas—first at rest, then carefully stressed to reveal the hidden cracks. This is why you cannot accurately judge a part’s condition while it is installed in the vehicle or before it has been removed and thoroughly inspected.

It’s common for damage like this to be overlooked because many people simply don’t inspect parts to this extent. This level of attention is what we strive to bring to every step of our professional restoration process.

I'm not saying this is the case with everyone's parts, but it's common. Don't judge your parts off of someone else's. A proper and very thorough inspection will be the judge of condition.

These are from an '84 Bronco we are doing a full roof to floor custom interior on.

We still have more work to do to these seats but here are some progress photos.

Bringing things back to life with nothing but proper techniques, industry-leading supplies, and craftsmanship.

This console lid was recently "restored" by another shop.
What you see in the before photos is not restoration. In fact... it's not even a repair. At best, it's a "get me by" band-aid, if you're being generous with your words.

The customer paid to have super glue smeared into one localized area, zero finish work performed, and a rattle can sprayed right over the mess.

Unfortunately, we see this type of "work" far more often than we'd like to admit in two forms: here on social media, where some shops proudly show what they believe restoration is, and in our own shop when customers bring us parts to fix the right way.

Our process was completely different.
We disassembled the lid, performed proper plastic welding and structural reinforcement, completed all necessary finish work, and refinished it using a true professional coloring system—not a spray can. Before any repairs even began, we custom color-matched and mixed the color from scratch on our workbench using primary and secondary toners.

The other shop got the work first because they were much cheaper and faster. Sometimes customers are happy with that decision. Unfortunately, based on what comes through our shop, we know that isn't always how it ends.
