I decided Toddler Towers were a good gift for Mother's Day, for Mommy and Grammy. I searched my Woodworking Magazine collection and couldn't find any mention, so I had to figure out my own design. Knowing how wiggly my grandson is, it had to be sturdy and difficult to tip and have easy height adjustments. Made of oak and with a wide stance, it should survive him and hopefully more grandkids. He thought it was pretty cool on his test run. Note: he did the handprints, for added decoration.

I'm getting ready for an upcoming class at the Marc Adams School of WoodWorking, "Decorative Details" with Steve Latta, and just finished building this mini bench. He featured this Bench-top bench in Fine Woodworking Magazine, for raising his work to a more comfortable height and a way to hold furniture parts for detail work. I'm looking forward to putting it to use.

Finished my turning class this afternoon. Last project was a hat. It'll turn oval shaped like a normal hat, as it dries (it was recently cut and still feels really moist). I'll put a couple elastic bands around it and the brim will curl up on the sides as it dries. This morning, I finished a little box, with a lid. Half of my projects need to dry a few months, before final sanding and finishing. It was a great week. I guess I need to catch up on the mowing now. 🫤

I'm back at the Marc Adams School of WoodWorking this week. Taking a turning class from Jimmy Clewes. Love his British accent. Great class, but a bit tiring and my hands are sore (lots of years holding a dental drill, I guess). My accomplishments for today: coves and beads the right way, my first ever platter, and a welcome bowl of ice cream to finish the day off. Plus a ton of sawdust and shavings. Stay tuned for more. 😁

A huge thank you to Matt Himler and Denny Swanson , for helping me get this mortiser down into my basement workshop. They definitely earned their Easter Dinner. I'm very happy I made a mobile base for it to sit on, it probably weighs at least 300 pounds. Plus, Matt got dressed up for his favorite nephew. 🐰

Opening week for the Marc Adams School of WoodWorking . I'm taking a furniture design class with Michael Fortune. Fortunately, it doesn't cost a fortune to learn from him. He has a crazy wild different approach, quite a bit different than the early American Furniture I usually build. More "Gallery" type furniture. It's forcing me to think outside the box, in a good way. I attached some of my wild designs. We had a field trip to an Antique Shop in Indianapolis this afternoon, to get ideas. I'm not giving up on my Early American Furniture - fell in love with a Highboy with a different spiral drawer carving I'd never seen before. Looking forward to the rest of the week. 🪚

My wife is fascinated with Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, as well as England. So, for Valentine's Day, I looked for something themed to make her. Woodcraft had a plan for a "Carved Welch Love Spoon."

I happened to have on hand, a scrap piece of poplar resawed to 1/4" and of adequate length and width. I traced and scrollsawed the pattern, carved the spoon and the illusion of intertwining hearts and other details, and finished with Odie's Dark Butter Oil/Wax. I then highlighted the intertwining hearts and intersections with Briwax, Dark Brown. Total time spent: roughly 6 hours over 4 days. Finished just in time for Valentine's Day.
