PAST RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT
Andrew Tran

Red Lodge Clay Center - STR 2023

Andrew Tran was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He attended Alfred University for his undergraduate studies. In 2018, he participated in an exchange program at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China, which led to an independent study in Jingdezhen.

He received a BFA from the School of Art and Design at the New York State College of Ceramics in 2019. After graduation, Andrew continued his ceramics practice in workshops at Purdue University Fort Wayne. Following his post-baccalaureate studies at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Andrew Tran moved to North Carolina for a ceramics internship at Starworks, where he specialized in utilitarian vessels and wild clay. He is currently pursuing an MFA at the University of Kansas.

“I see clay as an extension of myself as it records my touch and curiosity while I am exploring how to engage my identity as a Vietnamese American in context with historical and contemporary traditions…

…I share in the intimate relationship of a utilitarian vessel to bring details of imagery and texture to the user’s immediate senses. Utilitarian function is essential to my work, but a successful vessel allows me to explore my own necessity of purpose and contrives a conversation of beauty in identity with its user.“

Today our Long Term Residents and Staff visited the ! We saw two great exhibitions: “Folktale and Fanfare: The Art of Janina Myronova” and “Rebecca Hutchinson: Embedded in the Overlap”. We also toured the Visible Vault, which houses the YAMs permanent collection.

What a treat to see clay featured in two museum shows, and by artists both with roots in Montana. It was also a great way to celebrate International Museum Day (which coincidentally is today!). Thanks to the staff at the YAM for taking the time to share the artwork with us.

NEW WORK by Osa Atoe in our current Loft Gallery exhibition “Clay as Place: The Transient Object”.

Work included in “Clay as Place” features artists who make work related to a sense of place, and who explore ideas about their geographic environment as an intentional response to the transient nature of clay.

Of her work in this exhibition, Osa says, “I am presenting work decorated with terra sigillata made from clays I’ve foraged from various locations, including my birthplace. In the summer of 2025, …I was able to visit Blacksburg, VA where I was born, just an hour away… I made a point to return to the Virginia Tech campus duck pond, a place tied to my childhood memories, and I was able to collect a small amount of clay, which I processed into terra sigillata.

I have included in this collection of pots two mugs that feature this sig, along with ceramic decal photographs of myself and my best friend as toddlers feeding the ducks on that pond. As I decorate with these different clays, I am automatically transported back to the origins of the material. A small ball of clay is a piece of a place that I can bring back home with me, into my studio, to create meaningful works that are then sent back out into the world.”

Participating artists include Osa Atoe, Bandana Pottery, Casey Beck, Amy Edler, Gregg Moore, Kirsten Taylor, and collaborative works by Casey Whittier & Rena Detrixhe.

NEW WORK by Amy Edler in our current Loft Gallery exhibition “Clay as Place: The Transient Object”.

Work included in “Clay as Place” features artists who make work related to a sense of place, and who explore ideas about their geographic environment as an intentional response to the transient nature of clay.

Of her work, Amy says, “Working at the intersection of ceramics and textiles, I explore the relationship between identity, the body, and felt experience. My mixed-media practice employs traditional block printing techniques on clay, creating textured pieces that honor familial quilting traditions while investigating contemporary themes of bodily awareness and self-perception. I draw from my background in both art-making and psychology research to create abstractions of the body and natural world...” Amy’s piece in this exhibition is block printed linen and dyed with Montana clays.
