(SOLD): Antique Fraternal or Masonic Secret Ballot Box (ca 1880-1920)

This is a wonderful antique fraternal or Masonic secret ballot box which was often called a "blackball box". It dates from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. It was used by fraternal organizations like the Freemasons, and Odd Fellows, to vote on new member admissions. Members were give a white ball and a black ball. The high wooden side panels shielded the voter's hand, so nobody could see which ball was dropped through the center hole. It is in very good antique condition, and has some square nails and dovetailed corners. The portion that has the hole in it slides freely, and the cover also freely moves back and forth. It of course has wear from age, and use, which adds to its wonderful patina. It measures 14 3/4 inches long by about 7 3/4 inches, and is 11 inches tall at its tallest point. I have only seen a couple of these over the years, and this is only the second one of these that I have ever had. It is a wonderful piece of history!

We took a last minute trip yesterday, and of course we had to stop at a few shops and browse! We feel we brought home some wonderful pieces! The wooden piece on the very right is a Masonic secret ballot box. I also love the trunk with tack decoration and initials. Most of these items will be for sale in the near future.

For Sale: Antique Pathfinder Brand 1 Pound Coffee Tin (ca 1910-1920's)

This antique coffee tin is a historic advertising piece from the Steinwender-Stoffregen Coffee Co. based in St. Louis, Missouri. Julius Steinwender and Charles Stoffregen found their prominent coffee company in St. Louis in 1876. While their flagship product was "Yale Coffee", newspaper advertisements show they marketed the budget-friendly "Pathfinder" line heavily throughout the 1910's and 1920's. It is in good antique condition, but there is loss to the paper label on both sides and some fading. Overall it is still very presentable and a nice early coffee tin. It measures 3 1/2 inches tall and has a diameter of 5 1/4 inches. This is the first one of these coffee tins that I have ever seen, and I have had hundreds of coffee tins over the years.

This is a highly collectible antique Tone's Mellowtone Coffee tin. It was manufactured by the historic Tone Brothers, Inc. in Des Moines, Iowa. Founded in 1873, Tone Brothers holds a prominent place in American coffee history as the first company west of the Mississippi River to sell pre-roasted coffee. This is early 20th-century packaging, and it predates the widespread switch in 1930 to key-wind vacuum cans. It is in good antique condition, but is missing some of the paper label at the top. The majority of the label is still there. This 1-pound tin measures 5 1/2 inches tall and has a diameter of about 4 1/4 inches.
