Hahalua Designs

Hahalua Designs I make custom cribbage boards out of native and exotic woods. I also make some cutting boards. I also have started dabbling in wood turning.

First attempt at a captive ring on a turning project. Came out pretty good even thought it it's pretty small.

Also, I just retuned from Hawaii and picked up some new woods for my cribbage pegs. I'll post them when I get some turned. Should be a Hawaiian board or two coming also.

When I started all the cribbage board stuff a few years ago I never thought I'd be making new guns for a WW2 battleship. In December a lady at the gift show saw my pegs and asked if I could make new pegs for her uncles Battleship board. It is nice to be able to help restore someone's family heirloom.

I know this may be a little late but I know there is a few followers from the Roseburg gift fair at the fairgrounds and we are there again this year. Tomorrow is the last day but there will some discounted things. I have some of my new turned items like Kids tops (parents love them also), pens, Christmas ornaments and more as well as the cribbage boards and my new hand turned cribbage pegs which have been a big hit. Again, sorry for the late post but hope to see you again this year. A few have already been by and it's so great to see you again and thank you!

Wish me luck, my new pegs will be available at the Florence Boardwalk Market tomorrow. Hopefully people like them. So far I have pegs in 25 different wood species and in 6 different designs. Just keeping my fingers crossed for no rain so people actually show up to the market.

I know I haven't posted anything in a while. But it doesn't mean I have not been in the shop at all. I actually got something I said I would never get, a turning lathe. I took some wood to the local turning club and one thing lead to another and now I'm hooked on turning. Started with some pens (some will be going with their matching cribbage boards) and a duck call barrel for my son then I had a bright idea, "Cribbage pegs!". Wooden have a bad wrap for breaking inside the board then needing to be drilled out. I needed to make sure that doesn't happen so I came up with a solution, brass rod centers. Figured out what I needed to make this happen or if it could even be done. There is NOTHING online like this so no help there. They're not as nice as I'd like but as I get used to the lathe and tools things will improve and other designs I'm sure also. Let me know what you think.

I got some new boards ready for this weekends show in Yachats, Oregon. Most boards I've done in such a short time frame. I need to thank Montana Brand Tools for the drill bits that as usual, were up to the task of drilling over 4000 holes and not blink an eye and to Rockler Woodworking and Hardware for the great templates that help me make these great boards. I promise to get my stock updated here after the show this weekend. I have an all Purpleheart board with straight grain and fiddleback Purpleheart that I'm letting age a little to get the deepest color out of it before finishing. It should be amazing. Well if it isn't pre-purchased at the show.

Well I finally got back in my shop and finished the first of the boards I wanted to make for a while now. This first one is all true Rosewoods from Africa, South America, Central America and India. Next will be true Ebonies. These woods are extremely expensive and sometime very hard to find. I want to thank a couple of the wood suppliers that I got some of the woods for this, Peeples Exotic Wood LLC and Cook Woods. They both sold me quality wood at great prices which help keep my prices down. I also want to give a shoutout to Montana Brand Tools for the amazing X-29 drill bits that drilled these holes. To say drilling exotic woods like this is challenging is an understatement and the X-29 was up to the task and did so with flying colors. This board is also hand sanded down to 1000 grit and has no finish on it since the wood is so dense. It will only have Lemon oil on to help keep the wood oils from drying out.

Cutting and charcuterie boards have been updated with ones I have available. For some they can be a bit small but most of these you can pick up and they will fit in your sink for cleaning. 😁 For those who don't know the difference between end grain and side grain, they are pretty much just that, the end grain you see the end of the wood as you would if the log was lying on the ground. Side grain is the "Prettier" design where you see the full beauty of the wood grain. Professionals tend to like the end grain better because the knife edge cuts between the fibers and since they are oiled the fibers tend to heal back up. They will not show ware as soon as the side grain boards since you are cutting across the fibers on those. Chefs also say end grain boards will help the knife hold and edge longer. All of these boards are plenty thick enough that when the ware does start to show, they can be resurfaced and look like new.

I was able to get a few knives done for the upcoming show also. Again, I will post prices on ones I have left after the show. Most likely will not be making many more knives due to the time they take. I do have several kits left of the hunting knife with the sheath so if you need one of those for someone I can work something out. I have some nice wood for special handles on these.

Some new cutting boards finished. Haven't done any in a while but have a show coming up that these might go good. After the show I will price the ones I have left.
