Setting an auction record for any fruit jar was a cobalt-blue example embossed “The / Van Vliet / Jar of / 1881” that sold for $48,805 (includes buyer’s premium) at the January sale of North American Glass, which ended February 5. It is the only Van Vliet known in cobalt.

The quart container was likely made by a glasshouse employee using a batch of cobalt from another order. The jar had its original aquamarine lid—the color used for most Van Vliets—as well as its original cast-iron yoke clamp with thumbscrew and wrap-around wire. The jar was in excellent condition; the closest thing to a drawback was its embossing, which ranged from light to medium.
