Similar to the shell piece I posted yesterday, the first 'relief carving' piece I made was a soap dispenser for my husband's bathroom. During the last woodfiring, another piece tipped over and became fused to mine just below the head of the fish. Woodfiring is fraught with potential issues, but it is that same high-stress environment that produces such amazing results. Kind of like life, eh?! 💗 I was able to sand off much of the fused clay, and now this piece has a great story ✨️

This picture may seem odd, but let me explain. The small cup is the first piece I made when Jordan Zimmerman gifted me a 6 week class at Inspire Pottery Studio for Christmas, 2019. I threw the cup and hand built the shell. The soap dispenser is a very recent creation, made by throwing the bottle with thick walls, then carving the clay away to leave the shell and water swirls. It was fired in the recent woodfire. I love using handmade things ❤️🙌

I don't know about you, but this weather makes me dream of sunshine & sand 🌞🌴 These mugs are made using colored clay, and are meant to conjure thoughts of the beach and ocean.
