What started out as a straightforward adaptive re-use project of a well preserved historic building, Bedford Middle School took a bit of a downturn when a fire partially burned it down most of the way through the design process. There was severe roof damage, the cupola and windows were destroyed, and a lot of structural damage ensued. After revising the drawings to recreate the building as it once was, 59 studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments were infilled into the classrooms, office spaces, plus the stage and auditorium area. We also added a rooftop patio overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains, and refreshed the two interior courtyards. Renamed The Flora, this project is now ready for new tenants to call it home.
