A peek behind the scenes! We’ve been working on renderings for an exciting proposed kitchen redesign with one of our long-time clients in the Fan District!
The current kitchen opens to adjacent rooms, but instead of feeling open, the various ceiling heights, plumbing and mechanical soffits make the space feel disjointed. We propose adding a painted coffered ceiling to level disparate ceiling heights and conceal required plumbing and mechanical needs, while unifying the spaces. It also has a bonus of giving architectural interest to the room where it had been stripped out when it was opened up into a single room.
The existing kitchen footprint was large but unbalanced; the floor plan includes a large island centered on the 1st 2/3s of the kitchen cabinets, with a run of remaining cabinets to the left with dead space in front of them, making those cabinets feel detached from the rest of the kitchen.
Our plans create a more balanced kitchen by extending the island into the “dead space,” with the addition of the butcher block storage island extension.
This allows the range to feel centered in the kitchen, where we added a curved hood surround, a shape that matches other architectural elements in their first floor.
Our clients love to entertain and many of their friends are families with children. To make use of another underutilized space in their kitchen, our plan proposes retrofitting a large radiator that takes up most of this space with a smaller one that can function, but remain concealed at the base of a built-in dining bench. Shallow shelves or plate racks flank the windows and the bench to make the area feel like a nook while camouflaging vertical water pipes that run between the 1st and 2nd stories of the house. A dining bench with comfy cushions, a long oval table, attractive chairs with laminated fabric and a great light make this room welcoming for kid gatherings, craft hour or family dinner.
