There is something powerful about seeing a Mason-Lite fireplace move from construction to completion.

Shared by the team at Hearth and Home Distributors of Utah, this project brings together a tall opening, herringbone firebrick, a tailored stone surround, and a brick chimney breast that feels fully integrated into the room.

The result is a reminder that fireplace planning involves more than the finished appearance. The opening, application, installation conditions, surrounding materials, and project team all need to come together.

Planning a custom fireplace? Save this checklist for the first project conversation.

Gather what is currently available:

✓ Project location and application
✓ Opening dimensions and number of open sides
✓ Fuel direction, if known
✓ Plans, sketches, photographs, or inspiration
✓ Chimney and venting context already identified
✓ Project team and timing
✓ Confirmed decisions and open questions

You do not need every technical answer before starting. Clear information helps Mason-Lite, your dealer, and the project team understand the vision and determine what needs to happen next.

Planning a custom fireplace but do not have every technical answer yet?

You can still begin the conversation.

Start with what you know:

✓ Project location and indoor or outdoor application
✓ Desired opening and number of open sides
✓ Fuel direction, if known
✓ Plans, elevations, sketches, photographs, or inspiration
✓ Project stage and timing
✓ Decisions that still need guidance

That information gives Mason-Lite, your dealer, and the project team a more productive starting point. It can help us understand the design intent, identify missing inputs, and determine which fireplace path should be evaluated.

A better custom-fireplace conversation starts with the project information already available.

Before requesting a quote, gather the location and application, desired opening, number of open sides, fuel direction if known, available plans or inspiration, project timing, and the questions that still need guidance.

You do not need every technical answer before contacting Mason-Lite. The goal is to give us, your dealer, and the project team a clear starting point.

A custom fireplace often begins as part of the architecture, not as a finished product selection.

Before we can help bring that idea into focus, we need to understand how the fireplace is intended to work within the project:

• The desired opening and proportions
• The number of open sides and their orientation
• The indoor or outdoor application
• Available plans, elevations, sections, or sketches
• Fuel and venting information already known
• The project stage, timing, and decisions still requiring guidance

You do not need every technical answer before beginning the conversation. Clear design intent and the information already available give us, your dealer, and the project team a more productive place to start.

A larger outdoor living space may have more than one zone.

A main seating area.
A poolside lounge.
An outdoor kitchen.
A covered patio.
A dining space.

Each zone may call for a different kind of fire feature.

An outdoor fireplace can anchor the room. A fire feature can create a flexible gathering point. A pizza oven can support cooking and entertaining.

Compare the options in our new guide:

A great fireplace starts long before the finish work goes on. 🔥

This Mason-Lite project from Clay Structures,Inc. shows how early planning can make the fireplace feel like an intentional part of the home’s architecture from the start.

And that herringbone firebrick is going to be a standout detail. Looking forward to seeing this one finished!

A fireplace like this does more than warm up a room, it helps define it from the start.

This Mason-Lite fireplace is already beginning to show how much presence a well-planned focal point can bring to a home, even before the finish work goes on. From the scale of the opening to the herringbone interior detail, this is the kind of feature that will eventually help anchor the entire space.

That is why fireplace planning matters early. The best results happen when the fireplace is treated as part of the architecture of the home, not just a last-minute add-on.

At Clay Structures, we love helping homeowners and builders think through those decisions up front so the finished result feels intentional from day one.

Before choosing an outdoor fireplace, fire feature, or pizza oven, ask one question:

What is the outdoor space supposed to do?

Create a main gathering area?
Support outdoor cooking?
Add a flexible lounge?
Frame a covered patio?
Bring people together around food and fire?

Each option plays a different role.

Our new guide can help compare which one fits the space best:
