I attended the first ever NEDCON and had the best time! I got a ton of great insights from the conference, so we can serve our clients even better and spent my off work hours exploring.

Who has a huge, outdated corner tub in their bathroom?

We see a lot of them in older homes! They’re for little kids to swim indoors, but other than that, they dominate the bathroom footprint and don’t leave much space for helpful items like….a shower and a bigger vanity.

Just updating the fixtures and finishes bathroom isn’t enough. Space planning to make the layout more functional is what will make using the space more enjoyable.

There are details that are so difficult to replicate. When working on historic renovations, we make it a priority to keep as many of the original features as possible—they’re what make the home special.

Soffits are one of those things I avoid at all costs. But during renovations we sometimes need to just work around them.

Ideally, systems like plumbing and ductwork run within the joist bays. However, depending on the layout of your home, sometimes you need to systems to run perpendicular to the joists.

Smaller things like electrical and some small pipes can sometimes go through a hole in joists, but there’s a threshold where it’s no longer safe from a structural standpoint.

It doesn’t make sense to renovate a kitchen without improving the functionality at the same time

When we redesign a kitchen we always make tweaks to the layout. Updates spaces should reflect the way YOU live, not the way the last homeowner used the space.

On this wall we added a drop-zone, tall pantry cabinet with rollouts, and relocated the refrigerator to make the other end of the kitchen more spacious.
