When technology evolves but your buildings don’t, how do you incorporate tomorrow’s technology into today’s communities?

In one of our recent By Design sessions about reimaging senior living through AI, Joe Velderman, who was at Cypress Living at the time of the presentation, lead us through his approach to cultivating a culture of innovation with the four C's framework.

What better way to celebrate American invention than with a classic that first captured attention in Philadelphia?

Inspired by the Slinky, the famous spring toy accidentally invented by Richard James in 1943 and popularized through a Philadelphia department store demo in 1945, SFCS brought a little history to life at CANstruction Philadelphia 2026.

Ato Forster-Forson, Jeff Bohlen, Peter Nagel, Nick Scassero, and Matt Henigan designed and built a giant Slinky sculpture entirely from canned and packaged goods, with more than 2,500 items headed to local food banks after the event.

Even more exciting: the team took home the Most Cans award.

A little nostalgia, a lot of teamwork, and a design that kept giving long after the final can was placed.

"We got to work with a very specific demographic that we haven't gotten to design for."

Through SFCS Architects’ ongoing collaboration with Virginia Tech Industrial Design, students stepped outside of the classroom and into Warm Hearth Village by working directly with residents to understand the opportunities and challenges they experience every day.

Design becomes more thoughtful, more grounded, and more impactful because the people it’s meant to serve are part of the process. “The most helpful thing in coming up with ideas were the interviews and getting real feedback,” one student shared.

For SFCS, listening, partnership, and real-world perspective is at the core of how we approach architecture and design in senior living. By connecting students with elders, we’re helping shape a future workforce that understands design as both a technical discipline and a human-centered responsibility.

Health and fitness is important at every stage of our lives, which is why environments that make it easy, beautiful, and fun to support these habits are increasingly important the older we get.

This Older Americans Month, we’re championing health by celebrating the everyday choices and environments that help older adults stay active, connected, and independent.

We believe a true culture of wellness is built into the design and daily rhythms of a community by supporting movement, connection, and purpose at every turn.

That can look like:
➡️ Walkable, light‑filled corridors and outdoor paths that naturally encourage daily movement
➡️ Inviting stairs, fitness‑forward amenities, and flexible spaces that support strength and balance
➡️ Dining, wellness, and social spaces placed intentionally to promote connection and reduce isolation
➡️ Access to nature, daylight, and views that support both physical and mental well‑being

When physical activity, social engagement, and healthy habits are reinforced by the environment itself, residents are more likely to participate consistently and maintain independence longer.
