A literal silver lining, and a gorgeous example of a 1920s art nouveau sterling cigarette case.

This item sold before we could even put it formally into inventory to a fellow dealer. .950 silver - also known sometimes as "Peruvian silver" - was commonly employed by Taxco, French and eventually Japanese silversmiths (during the post-WW2 occupation) for fine and luxury items. It was marketed as Britannia Silver in the UK with its own unique stamp.

The lack of French or Britannia hallmarks or the Taxco name and the presence of the simple "Sterling" stamp indicates this was an item made for the US market (possibly the US distribution wing of a larger international company), circa 1910-1925.

These items are a smoke show!

We've recently gone hunting for cigarette cases ever since a friend of ours asked if we had one in stock to use as a wallet.

We're drawn to the elaborate nature - the enamel, the inlay, the repousse, the motifs- of these items that used to be so ubiquitous. I mean, smoking was only banned on airplanes (and most places) starting in 1988!

Smoking has been a ritual of pleasure since its introduction into European civilization in the late 15th century, already having a longer, storied culture amongst the indigenous people of the Americas. It existed and still exists in both low-brow and luxurious forms, and cigarette cases such as these are an excellent reflection of the culture, era and artistic sensibilities of the era in which they were made!

A sunburst for Sunday!

This 1960s rattan headboard- known as a "sunburst" or "peacock" pattern - is a frequent motif and material of the "Tropical Regency" style, also known as "Old Florida".

The original fixture bag and tag show it was made by Golden Belt of Durham, N.C. but sold in good old Medford. Guess someone wanted their South Shore cottage to have a little bit of the more southern coastal flare at one time (maybe to counteract those New England winters?).

Today we're "following the current"- the electrical current!

The 1940s, reeling from the after effects of the Great Depression and the Second World War, leaned into artistic and constructive motifs of adventurous escapism. The Spanish galleon was a heavily used motif that represented swashbuckling and a romanticized past (the Golden Age of Sail!), popping up in decor, cinema and illustrarions thanks to artists like Howard Pyle.

These two lamps- in working condition! - are an excellent example of this movement and would equally fit right in in the study of your seaside manse or a gift for that child who pretends to be a pirate in their free time.

Trotting on this globe is not recommended, but it's got a ton of useful facts, a spotlight, and the USSR still identified!

Co-founded in Denmark in 1963 by Replogle, the ScanGlobe company produced quality educational globes for the home and classroom under its own name and the Reader's Digest brand. Replogle eventually re-absorbed the company completely in 1988. The internal spotlight and latitude-longitude dials allows one to highlight locations, and serves double duty as an attractive desk piece and a lamp!

Mirror, mirror on a stand, who's the prettiest in the land?

Intended to evoke the style of the earlier "psyche" brass doré mirrors of the 19th century. While earlier examples were made using the "ormolu" process - in which gold mixed into mercury and then painted on a brass or bronze base- these later examples were made of solid-cast iron or pewter, and were thus markedly less expensive AND less toxic.

Revival art pieces were heavily reproduced for larger audiences during the 1940s-1970s - Roccoco, Egyptian, Greek and Art Nouveau were heavily reintroduced in fashion and furniture during the mid-century.
